Student's Weaving 

Quinn and Dylan F (Grade 2) have been working hard on weaving during their breaks, they have been using grasses around the school to weave mats. Last week they took it to the next level and wove a basket together. It is always so wonderful to see students being creative in their breaks. 

Prep

This week we are finishing our sculptures inspired by Hiromi Tango. Next week we will be beginning our clay unit. We will be using paper clay and our focus will be on birds! Each prep student will be asked to create a bird which will be able to walk and move.

We have also finished our flower mural inspired by Bria Robinson. Brian Robinson is a multi-skilled contemporary artist whose practice includes painting, printmaking, sculpture and design. Creative from a young age, he has enjoyed a long career as a curator and visual artist. His work is inspired by his Torres Strait Islander heritage and combines his passion for experimentation crossing boundaries between reality and fantasy. The work is now hanging proudly in the Prep building. These were made entirely out of recycled paper and art from gel plate printing.

Grade 1/2

After learning about balance extraordinaire, Alexander Calder, we have been practicing the art of balance on our sculptures.

Alexander Calder's "balance" refers to the essential principle of engineering he used to invent his kinetic sculptures, known as mobiles, which are carefully weighted and suspended to achieve movement through air currents or motors. He created asymmetrical yet perfectly balanced systems of components—flat shapes of metal connected by wire—that move and shift in relation to each other, creating a harmonious, dynamic composition. His process involved starting with the smallest elements and progressively adding weight and components, finding the balance point for each connecting arm until the entire sculpture was perfectly balanced.

Grade 4

The Grade 4 classes are slightly ahead, so they will be starting a new sculpture unit. We have been investigating Nick Cave's sound suits. These suits send important messages about identity and symbolism. 

This week we created a 2D sound suit using collaging techniques. It was fascinating to watch them create when given the freedom to do whatever they wished. Before beginning, children needed to look at their model and think about that person's identity and what messages they might like to send to the world. 

Next week we will build the armature of our person so we can make a 3D model of a sound suit.

Artist of the Month

Ettie H - 6A

Ettie loves to draw and paint with watercolours. She draws every single day as it is a passion of hers. She really likes creating abstract art because there aren't too many rules so you can let your imagination run wild. She wants to create art that is bright, bubbly and fun. Her advice to anyone trying to get better at Art is to practise every day.
