Learning and Care
When students feel safe and sense of belonging, when they are engaged and connected to their school, when they experience wellbeing, their learning improves. Professor Donna Cross is a well known expert in children and adolescent health and she offers a definition of wellbeing as: 'feeling well, functioning well and feeling connected'. It seems a simple thing, but in the realities of daily life, sometimes this can be harder to achieve than it looks.
An important part of supporting the wellbeing of our school community (part of the 'Care' in our focus on Learning and Care) is the role of Chaplain Levi, who has recently joined our school community...well, actually, he has returned...as Levi is a GSG graduate. Levi and I have had a few conversations about what it is like for him to return to GSG in this new role, which he is passionate about. As a new member of the team there have been moments of uncertainty and tentativeness, which is to be expected. But, that is all rapidly making way for Chaplain Levi becoming a much loved and well respected part of the team. Just this past week I have watched him move seamlessly from giving a blessing at Chapel, to supporting colleagues in a prayer meeting, playing softball with our Years Seven to Nine students, connecting with and becoming a magnet for many of our Secondary students during break times, and providing one to one support for young people struggling with the reality of the day to day, as well as being a supportive presence in the Primary School. It is exciting to share this journey with Chaplain Levi and I can not wait to see what he gets involved in next. Keep an eye out for Levi and make him feel welcome.
Individual Athlete of the Year – Congratulations Mason Watkins!
On Sunday evening, the Great Southern Academy of Sport (GSAS) held its 2025 Gala Awards Night, celebrating excellence in regional sport.
We are proud to share that Year Ten student Mason Watkins (Mokare) was named the GSAS Male Individual Athlete of the Year (Athletics). With many talented athletes in the programme, competition was fierce, but Mason stood out for his dedication, performance and outstanding attitude.
Congratulations, Mason, on this well-deserved recognition!
