Head of Sport Report

Last weekend we had four of our BMGS teams make it through to the grand finals for touch football and basketball. Congratulations to all teams that made both the semis and finals. A special mention goes to the First V and Junior B Girls Basketball teams who came away with gold after two strong wins. The First VI and Junior Girls touch football teams both made it to the finals however they were both up against very strong opponents and came home with the silver.

Now that we are moving into winter sport all students are reminded to be watching the screens for updates on trials and trainings. The myBMGS pages also contain information required for all of our winter sports.

Congratulations - Rowing

On Sunday 3rd March, Jessica Harris competed in the 2024 NSW Schoolgirl HOTR held at Sydney International Regatta Centre.

Jessica competed in the 2km Year 10 Single Scull Event (27 entrants) and after winning Heat 2, qualified for the finals later that afternoon. Amongst a very competitive field Jessica smashed her PB and overall placed 5th in the final, narrowly missing out on the medals. Well done Jessica!

Many thanks to Nepean Rowing Club for the loan of boats & the coaching.

Congratulations - Golf

This year we had two students qualify to compete at the NSWCIS Golf Championships in Newcastle. Jesse Hardaker has qualified to compete at the NSW All Schools tournament and Harry Daniels is first reserve. This is an outstanding achievement for both boys and a first for Blue Mountains Grammar.

First V Girls Team

The First V Girls went into the grand finals as minor premiers. This meant that they had the semi-final weekend off which does not always work to the advantage of the minor premiers. The first half saw equal possession by BMGS and CCGS resulting in a half-time score of 13-13. BMGS had their work cut out for them to be able to break the tie. The second half started slowly but then the BMGS girls stepped up the pace and were able to get a number of fast breaks to take the lead. This continued for the remainder of the game with the girls taking a well-deserved 29-18 win.

Junior B's Girls

The Junior B Girls came up against Barker in the grand finals. Our team finished the season in second place so were seen as underdogs for this matchup. The girls started slowly but as the game progressed they were able to capitalise on a number of steals and finish these off with good baskets.  The teamwork the girls displayed was the best for the season and a credit to the effort put into improving their game. Well done girls.

Summer Season Roundup

The ISA competition for tennis runs a little differently to the competitions for other sports.

On Saturday 2nd March, we had our doubles championships. Each school brought two doubles teams and were placed into two Pools. They then played 3 matches, the first to 6 with a tie-breaker at 5-5.

Pool A consisted of KWS 1, SSC 2, SASC 1 and BMGS 2 (Raphael and Laurits). They had some tough competition in their pool and played well, staging some good comebacks in their matches. KWS 1 had a win 6-4, then SSC2 won 8-6 in the tie-breaker at 5-5 (Raphael and Laurits had been down 5-2) and finally, after that long match, SASC 1 proved too strong, winning 6-1.

Pool B consisted of SSC 1, KWS 2, BMGS 1 (David and Alex) and SASC 2. David and Alex got off to a good start winning their first match 6-2, however, they were comprehensively beaten in their next match by a very strong St Stanislaus team, and then Kinross 2 won the match 6-2.

For the final, KWS 1 played against SSC 1 with Stanislaus coming out as the overall winner.

On Friday 8th March, we had our last training session for the season. Thanks to our wonderful coach, Nicole, all our players have improved. Each week, we have seen how many shots they could hit against their partner in a two minute time slot. Nicole says that over the 10 weeks, this has jumped by 50% from their first time around. Well done boys.

On Saturday 9th March, it was the Singles Championships. Thank you to Arman and to Joel for driving out to Orange for the boys to take part in the competition. It was the same set up as in the Doubles.

Alex had matches against SSC 1, SASC 2 and KWS 1 as part of Pool A. He tried very hard and has learnt a lot from this experience. After a first round loss to SASC 1, David came back to win the next two sets against SSC 2 and KWS 2, placing him in the semi-finals. In the semi-final, David played some good shots and fought hard, however, Jake from SASC was too strong winning 6-3.

The final was SASC1 (Izaac) vs SASC2 (Jake) with Izaac having a convincing win. In fact, Izaac did not lose a game throughout.

Thank you all for the season. It has been great working with you.

Semi Finals

Saturday 2nd March saw our First VI Boys and our Junior Girls play in the Touch Football Semi Finals at Macquarie University. As the boys thought they had been eliminated from the competition in the final round, it was a nice surprise to see that, due to the for and against points tally, they had actually made the Semis. They played hard against St Patrick’s College with Keeden and Hunter each scoring once and Xavier Stephens scoring 2 tries. Unfortunately though, St Pat’s was the stronger team on the day, winning 18-8.

The Junior Girls had a fantastic game against Barker College. It was so exciting to watch so many tries being scored by Eddie (2), Rose (2), Augie, Arrow and Aletheia. Scoring for Semi finals is different to regular rounds, to ensure there isn’t a draw at the end of the game. The first try is worth 3 points, with each subsequent try valued at 2 points. As a result BMGS won convincingly with a final score of 15-2.

The First VI Girls team finished in first place on the ladder and have progressed directly to the finals, so did not play on 2nd March.

Finals

Our First VI Girls and Junior Girls travelled to Macquarie University to play in the Touch Football Finals on Saturday. It was a very hot and humid day but both teams were excited to play and had excellent games.

The Junior Girls played Redlands. They went out hard in the first half but were unable to score any tries. Although they were excited to be at the finals and did their best against a very strong Redlands team, the second half saw the girls hot and fatigued and they were unable to break through the other team’s defence. They were unfortunately defeated 9-0.

The First VI Girls started their game against Scots All Saints nervously. They just couldn’t seem to find their usual rhythm and speed and went into half time down by 3 tries.  Although it was super hot and the girls were tired, they were pumped up by Hamish (standing in coach for this game) and started the second half strongly with a quick try from Tarana. Marley followed with our second try for the game and it looked like we might have a chance at premiership. Unfortunately time was against us and the whistle blew with the score at 3-2 to Scots.

I was so proud of our girls in the finals, and of the sportsmanship, camaraderie and love of the game from all Touch Football players this season.

A special thank you to Hamish for coaching the Girls Firsts team on Saturday and to Tarana and Hamish for being excellent role models as captains of the season.

Please look out for your invitation to our Touch Football Presentation Evening on 26th March. I look forward to celebrating with you all then.
