From the Head of the Junior School

The Junior School have been focusing intentionally on Well-being this year. Building an understanding of Self-Awareness has been the particular focus this term. Classes have been exploring the identification of feelings and how feelings are valuable. It’s possibly surprising to adults that not all children recognize and name feelings the same way – learning to understand how different children experience and portray feelings, and how we express our own emotions, is deep learning for children.

We are promoting a sense of belonging in each class, each campus and within the broader school. Teaching children that everyone has value, something to offer and that we all belong together is very important. The explicit teaching we do in classes and at assembly gives children a common understanding, so that when things happen and the “rubber hits the road”, our students can be redirected and corrected.

It’s encouraging to see our younger students explore many of their well-being concepts and skills during their Wild Ed time. Students are realising that they are capable and have much to contribute to class and small group activities. Children are learning and playing, then reflecting that everyone has valuable ideas and skills that are essential when working together.

In a few weeks, our Stage 3 and Stage 4 students will attend an incursion called “Backflip on Bullying” and I know that this will provide excellent reinforcement of the content Mr Forbes and Mrs Spohr have been covering in class. The Stage 3 camp will also promote a well-being focus and while camp is fun, it also provides opportunity to stretch and grow with interpersonal skills.

Kind regards
