LOTE - Chinese - Term 1

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the first newsletter of Term 1 2024 for LOTE Chinese! We're excited to kick off the new year with a range of engaging topics and activities across all year levels. Let's dive into what our students have been up to over the past five weeks:

Prep:

Our Prep students have been immersing themselves in the basics of Chinese language and culture. They've started with essential greetings like "Ni hao" (hello) and "Zai jian" (goodbye), laying the foundation for their language journey. Additionally, they've explored Chinese symbolism by drawing the Chinese flag and designing their own Chinese lanterns. To add a musical touch, they've also learned their first Chinese greeting song, the "Nihao song," which has filled their classrooms with joy and enthusiasm.

Junior School:

Junior School students in Grade 1 and Grade 2 have been busy decorating their Chinese book front covers for the year, infusing creativity into their learning materials. They've celebrated Chinese New Year by making special Year of the Dragon lanterns, embracing the festive spirit. In language lessons, they've practiced self-introduction and greetings, mastering phrases like "Ni hao" (hello), "Wo jiao" (my name is), and "Zai jian" (goodbye), setting the stage for meaningful interactions.

Middle School:

In Middle School, Grade 3 and Grade 4 students have been unleashing their creativity by designing their Chinese book front covers for the year. They've immersed themselves in the traditions of Chinese New Year, exploring the Chinese zodiac and crafting Year of the Dragon headbands. Language skills have been honed through greeting conversations, and students have showcased their creativity by creating their own Chinese conversations in their books, adding a personal touch to their learning experience.

Senior School:

Senior School students have been expanding their Chinese language skills with an emphasis on greetings. They've extended their vocabulary and practiced imaginative writing using all the greetings words they've learned. Additionally, they've delved into the fascinating history of the Beijing Olympics, learning interesting facts about the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Winter Olympics. This exploration has broadened their cultural awareness and appreciation.

As we reflect on the past five weeks, it's evident that our students have embraced the language and culture of Chinese with enthusiasm and dedication. We look forward to the exciting learning adventures that lie ahead in the coming weeks.
