Grade 1 and 2

THRIVING IN GRADE 1 AND 2

We are THRIVING in Grade 1 and 2. The students are embracing our THRIVE program across the curriculum.

Literacy

Our focus is on retelling/summarising the events of our story sharing our comprehension of a variety of texts. We are building narratives based on a character, setting, problem and solution. Our students have been involved in building vocabulary through daily whole class, peer and independent reading and writing practice. Reader’s and Writer’s workshop provide opportunities for developing strategies for sentences building, learning to spell new words and contributing to whole class and peer composition of short imaginative texts. Shared story experiences have focussed on story starters, narrative, word and sentence  structures, word choice, grammar and punctuation.

Numeracy

We are exploring all things numbers. This involves counting forwards and backwards, skip counting, patterns and place value. Students have been building skills around describing number sequences resulting from skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s and as a challenge counting backwards from a given number by 2s, 5s and 10s. We have been creating paper strip patterns, reinforcing basic facts and number knowledge. Start with ones - 1, 2, 3, 4, then twos - 2, 4, 6, 8. fives, tens and 3s, 4s, 6s for a challenge! We have also enjoyed singing skip counting songs together! Skip counting on the Pop Its are a HIT!

THRIVE

We have introduced our THRIVE Program at ACPS in conjunction with our school values and houses.

RESPECT - At ACPS, we are understanding and considerate of everyone's rights and it is at the heart of all behaviour.

RESPONSIBILITY - Learning responsibility gives us the confidence we need to take on new tasks and challenges with a positive mindset.

HONESTY - Honesty strengthens relationships, fosters empathy, and builds community.

OPTIMISM - Optimism is positive thinking! Optimism can make a difference in the world!

The students had a wonderful afternoon in their house colours, learning about our new program, where we are heading as a school community and engaging with each other across all year levels. In the afternoon it was a Minute to Win It! Students worked with each other in their houses to earn points. This built a great culture and saw students of all ages with big smiles on their faces in giving it a go.

We look forward to our ongoing THRIVE work throughout the year.

Have a great long weekend!
