Vocational Major

This term, Year 10VM Literacy students have been harnessing their hip-hop knowledge and working on crafting their own original lyrics. Students have been analysing a variety of songs, particularly rap music, and developing their understanding of the elements of lyrics such as rhyme, theme and figurative language.

In Week 5, students attended a workshop at ‘The Channel’ at the Arts Centre Melbourne and worked with Australian rapper and hip hop pioneer N’fa Jones to write an original chorus and verse. They experimented with rhyme and flow, and applied the three golden rules of rap lyric writing to their own work (timing, rhyming and aligning). At the end of the workshop, students could perform their lyrics on stage to a backbeat, showcasing their talents and skills to N’fa and their peers!

A big thank you to Mr Neilson for arranging the excursion and to Mr MJ for his invaluable assistance on the day.

Our Year 11 and 12 VCEVM students are off to a flying start in Project Learning classes. Their first project was to run an afternoon of activities for over 100 Year 7s. They sought to provide the Year 7s with an opportunity to grow their team building skills; activities included Kick Ball, Skipping, Egg and Spoon races, Beach Volleyball and many more!

With guidance from teachers, students worked groups to plan, organise, advertise and manage their activities. A BBQ team also ensured that all students had a delicious lunch to enjoy after the activities. VCEVM students were able to develop their understanding of the process for running events for large groups.

Project Learning students are now busy planning and organising events and food stalls to run at the upcoming whole school Cross Country event. They are also set to complete two qualifications this term – their RSA and Food Handling and Barista Training. Through running projects and gaining qualifications, our Project Learning students can develop meaningful ‘real-world’ skills which they can take with them into the future.
