Highlighting 7A

7A have settled into secondary school life ‘like a hand in a glove’. Students are extremely well prepared for their classes. They are respectful and have already earned themselves heaps of values points. Most students went to the camp at The Summit and had a fabulous time.

We have students from seven different primary schools so much of our focus has been on getting to know each other and becoming a cohesive class. We are looking forward to having a fabulous year together.

In English and Maths students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and be prepared to make mistakes and learn from them. This is already happening, which is great, and many students are getting more confident to speak up in class.

In Maths we have covered a number of topics that have allowed students to revise the four operations.  Reading worded problems and working out the type of maths needed to solve them is part of most lessons, as well as some type of fun activity that uses their basic number skills.

In English we have written some short texts that focus on having a ‘sizzling start’. Students will then write a creative piece that they will revise using the skills we are learning in order to make their text as powerful as possible.

Performing Arts

7A has kicked off the year in performing arts with a Theatre unit focusing on Mime. Students have worked hard to develop basic performance skills such as improvisation, use of tableaux as well as learning the key techniques of effective mime.  Here they can be seen practicing for their first performance task, The Escape! Students develop a short, mimed routine in which they must overcome three mimed obstacles in their daring escape.

Systems

7A are building, testing and learning the components to build an electronic circuit onto a circuit board then designing a project for it to fit into or onto, with the further challenge of making a part of it move, using multiple materials, wood, metal, and acrylic sheet.

Science

Throughout this term we have been completing the first topic ‘What is Science?’

In this topic students have learnt about the different pieces of science equipment and all the safety rules needed to be a successful scientist. The highlight of this topic is learning about the Bunsen burner, and more specifically, how to use it. Students demonstrate how to safely set up the apparatus and light the Bunsen burner. They are then quizzed on the parts of the Bunsen burner and its purpose. If students are successfully able to light their Bunsen burner and pass the quiz, they receive their Bunsen burner license.
