Creating Futures Together

Structured Workplace Learning (SWLs)

If you are undertaking a VET studies (Vocational Education & Training) it is highly recommended that you complete a one-week work placement in the industry related to the course you’re undertaking. (per year)  Several of our 2024 VCE VM students are currently out on placement and gaining invaluable skills.

SWLs are delivered in partnership between schools and employers or community organisations.  A Structured Workplace Learning placement assists students with supporting their aspirations, developing soft skills and building industry connections which then may result in part-time work.

Depending on the student’s school program, at Wheelers Hill Secondary College, SWLs can occur during the following times:

  1. Weekly – students out on placement one day per week
  2. End of school term – students out on placement for one week during the last week of term 1,2 or 3

The Education Department has strict guidelines surrounding the duration of SWLs and they are:

Placements must not-

  • Exceed more than 10 days in one term
  • Exceed more than 20 days with the one employer
  • Exceed more than 40 days in the whole school year

If you are thinking about undertaking an SWL there are SWL documents that must be completed, signed and submitted to the Careers Coordinator for checking.  SWL forms can be downloaded via the school’s Career Website – www.whsccareers.com, under the Workplace Learning tab.  Arrangements must be submitted to the Careers Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the placement commencing.
