Principal's Desk

From Ms Nicole Smith

Good afternoon OPS families,

World Teacher's Day

Last week we celebrated World's Teachers Day. This is wonderful opportunity to thank all of our teachers for the work that they do both in and out of the classroom to support students to be successful learners. The OPS staff are an amazing bunch to work with, and I feel very privileged to be the Principal at Officer Primary.  The staff enjoyed a lovely morning tea provided by the PFA and it was lovely to see that so many students wrote messages to the teachers which were presented at assembly.

Step Into Prep

On Wednesday we had our second Step Into Prep session. The session began in our Library followed by a STEAM session and PE session with Ms Dyt and Mr Shaw. It was wonderful to see our 2026 Prep settle into the session with ease and enjoy the session with Ms Dyt and Mr Shaw. Our next session is Thursday 27th of November where our 2026 Prep students will bring fruit snack and a teddy bear for the Teddy Bears Picnic.

Uniform Policy Update

Last Tuesday School Council ratified the updated uniform policy. The change to our policy is that as of 2026 we will be changing the colour of the pants, shorts and skorts to black. This is a gradual change that will slowly take place over 2026.

In 2026 the Uniform Sub-Committee will work with our uniform supplier PSW to update the design of our polo shirt, jackets and jumpers. The key considerations when updating the uniform will be comfort, durability, cost and style.  The committee will ask for feedback from the community at various points in time and then present any recommendations to school council. All changes will be communicated early, and families will be given time to update their uniforms. All parents are welcome to be part of the uniform sub committee, if you would like to be involved, please email me.

Staffing 2026 & Grade Structure

I would like to take the time to announce that Miss Amber Augustus has accepted a teaching position at Kulap Primary School for 2026. On behalf of the OPS community, I would like to thank Amber for all of her contributions to OPS. I would like to personally thank Amber for all that she has done for the OPS community and while I will miss her warmth and enthusiasm in 2026 and wish her all the best at Kulap.

We are currently finalising staffing for 2026 and will make announcements to the community in the coming weeks. We have finalised our class structure for the year. In 2026 we will be having 7 classes again, the class formation is as follows

Prep  x1

Grade 1 x1

Grade 2 x1

Grade 3/4 x2

Grade 5 x1

Grade 6 x1

Students will continue to have Physical Education classes for an hour a week, STEAM classes for two hours per week and Performing Arts (Music, Dance and Drama) for an hour a week. We are continuing to look for an AUSLAN teacher to ensure that our AUSLAN program continues into 2026.

Student Attendance

Throughout the year you will often hear us address the importance of attending school each day. Daily school attendance is important for all children to succeed in education and ensure they do not fall behind both socially and developmentally. Children who regularly attend school have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. It is important children develop the habit of attending school daily at an early age. There are no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind and can affect their longer term educational and social outcomes. It is just as important for students at the beginning of their school journey to be at school each day as it is for those who are moving on to secondary school next year. EVERY day is important to ensure solid foundations for learning are built. We will continue to monitor student absences, particularly unexplained absences, which means you will receive a phone call from the school any time your child is absent for unexplained reasons and sometimes even when the absence is explained. If your child is absent, please inform us before 10 am of the reason. We will also not approve absences due to extended family holidays which occur during the term. Whilst it is more expensive, in terms of your child’s development, it is only safe to go on family holidays during the school holidays.

Sandpit Opening - Take 2

Our last efforts to celebrate our sandpit upgrade were well and truly washed out! We will try again on the 28th November- hopefully the weather will be on our side and we can celebrate our sandpit upgrade which has been made possible through the fundraising efforts of the OPS community over the last 12 months.  All families are welcome and they stay for assembly afterwards.
