FOUNDATION NEWS

The days are going by very quickly in Foundation as we continue to explore and learn about many new and exciting things!

This coming week includes a couple of firsts for us! We will be participating in the Fire Education program run by the Brunswick Fire Station on Tuesday, our skills and maths knowledge will be put to the test on Wednesday as we participate in the Foundation Maths Games Day and we are very excited to join the whole school in the Athletics Carnival on Friday. Go Red, Blue, Green and Yellow Teams!

As writers, we have been learning about the features of Narratives. In particular, we have been learning that adjectives in our writing add further detail and make our writing more interesting. As a class, we have been reading the fairy tale stories ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We then focused on the characters from these stories, such as the Big Bad Wolf, the Pigs, the Woodcutter, Grandma and Little Red Riding Hood, and used adjectives to describe what they looked like, what they were wearing, and their personality. We are very proud of the efforts we are putting into our writing when trying to use adjectives.

The Foundation learning spaces were buzzing with excitement last Wednesday when we participated in an incursion run by ‘Buzzing Minds’. Sylvaine came to our school to share her amazing knowledge about bees with us. She brought in one of her bee hives filled with bees and then proceeded to inform us about the Bee life-cycle, how honey is made and extracted from the hives, how bees find and store nectar from the garden as well as many interesting facts about bees. She also showed us the protective suit she wears when working closely with her hives. Many questions were asked by all of us in order to deepen our understanding of bees!

After listening to Sylvaine, we had time and opportunity to create our very own candle made from beeswax. Our incursion was definitely a wonderful way to explore the importance of bees and their role in keeping our gardens vibrant and colourful spaces.

YEAR 1/2 NEWS

We have had a wonderful and eventful week in the Year 1/2 community! We had a busy week full of many exciting maths experiences!

The Year 1/2 students celebrated their final year-level Mass together last Tuesday. They responded beautifully to the prayers, and those who read or took part in the offertory did an excellent job.

We want to say a big thank you to Mrs Monaghan for organising such an engaging and exciting day full of maths games and activities! We took part in lots of different challenges, competing for the most points with our teams. It was both fun and challenging. Congratulations to the teams who won each session, and to the overall winning team!

As mathematical thinkers, we have been learning how to tell the time using clocks and calendars. We practised reading o’clock and half-past times, and enjoyed a hands-on activity where we made our own analogue clocks. We also learned about the seasons, the months of the year, and how many days are in each month. We first made our own calendars and then used them to work out how many days are between different dates, helping us understand calendars even better!

As inquiries, we have continued to explore our big question “Design: How can we make a difference?”. This week, we have come together to generate 100 ideas for ways we can use the design process to make a difference to the world. We’ve shown amazing creativity in coming up with a range of ideas that could help a specific ecosystem (eg. the ocean or the desert), groups of people (eg. those with disabilities or allergies), innovating on existing technology (eg. alternative energy sources, hydro cars) or wider environmental issues (eg. littering, ozone layer).

YEAR 5/6 NEWS

Literacy

As writers, we are continuing to explore narratives, delving into different story arcs and how authors build tension and resolve conflict. Students are experimenting with their own creative ideas and showing great imagination in their writing!

Mathematics

As mathematicians, we have begun our data investigation projects. Students are collecting, representing, and analysing data to answer real-world questions. It’s been fantastic to see them take ownership of their projects and apply their mathematical thinking in meaningful ways.

The Resilience Project

As part of our The Resilience Project (TRP) Inquiry unit with The Embrace Collective, students are learning about positive body image, self-acceptance and empathy. This week, students explored gender stereotypes, examined how stereotypes can shape how we see ourselves and others, and discussed ways to challenge these ideas to embrace individuality and kindness. Over the coming weeks, students will continue engaging with lessons that promote compassion, confidence and appreciation for their bodies and minds.

Inquiry

As inquirers, each class has selected a natural disaster to research in depth. Students are exploring preventative measures and considering how communities can prepare and respond effectively. We are looking forward to sharing this learning with you at our Celebration of Learning. Keep an eye out for the date!
