Maths Talent Quest is an amazing learning experience for students in grades 4-6. It also gives selected students an opportunity to showcase their math skills. To participate once selected, you must make your own project out of school related to maths in up to groups of three. It can be about anything, from running a taco store for a day to a trip around Australia, as long as there is maths included. In conclusion, MTQ is an awesome way to show off your math skills and get a certificate, or even a high distinction like we did.

Our project was about how an average house in Port Melbourne could save money and benefit the environment by using solar panels. We investigated the amount of sunlight on an average day, compared bills with and without solar panels and learnt how solar panels can help the land and prevent air pollution.

During the project we discovered many different and interesting things such as the unit of electricity that solar panels use, how solar panels can positively affect the environment and how long it would take until you would start saving money. We were very proud that our project made it through to the state levels and got awarded with a high distinction.

To get to go to this ceremony, we had to get to state voting after school voting, then get the highest honour, high distinction. The Ceremony, held at Melbourne University, was really exciting because it was a reflection of our hard work. There were students and schools from all over Victoria aging between prep and year 8 attending.
