Year 6 electives

This term, our Year 6 students are getting an exciting glimpse into secondary school life. After choosing two electives, they’ve enjoyed learning alongside friends who share their interests.

Cooking

– Dylan, Alby, Cristian

This term in Cooking class has been a delicious adventure! It was packed with fun, learning, and a little friendly competition.

Our first (and tasty!) mission? Cookies! We teamed up to find the perfect cookie recipe - taking just 20 minutes to decide on their creations - before rolling up our sleeves and getting baking. Along the way, we learned important kitchen skills, including safety tips and the secrets to making cookies that are both crunchy and chewy. To make things extra exciting, we held a “Best Cookie” competition. The cookies were judged by our very own taste-testers: Miss Elara, Mr. Jackson, and Miss Brooke. Every bite was delicious, but only a few could be crowned champions! This experience has shown that Cooking class is about more than just food - it’s teamwork, creativity, and confidence in the kitchen.

We think it’s definitely an elective that should stay on the menu for next year and we can’t wait to see what we’ll cook up next!

Nutrition

– Clara, Will, Lana

In Performance Nutrition, we designed a perfect healthy breakfast and wrote about the nutritional items of the breakfast into our booklets. We also made a brekkie bowl full of nutritional foods like seeds, berries, oats, Greek yogurt and plenty more. Over the next few weeks, we will be creating nutritious pre-game and post-game food plans, learning about hydration, perspiration and hopefully making some more delicious food!

Chinese

– Jaden, Kirin, Adi

In Chinese class, we’ve been learning the basics, including how to greet others, say goodbye, and ask for someone’s name. We also practiced writing and saying common phrases like “Nǐ hǎo ma?” (How are you?) and “Wǒ hěn hǎo” (I’m good). An exciting part of our lessons has been exploring the different tones in Chinese and learning how to pronounce words correctly. Although we’ve only just begun, Chinese lessons have already been both challenging and incredibly fun!

Coding

– Roham, Tommy S

In coding class, we explored retro games and experimented with Scratch to understand the types of coding behind them. We learned how to create our own Scratch games, and our teacher even tested some of our projects. By studying these classic games, we’re gaining inspiration and knowledge to help design the game we’ll create ourselves. We can't wait to see the finished products soon!

Textiles

– Lucy, Charlotte, Peach

In week four, we kicked off our sewing and textiles lessons with a visit from Harry’s mum, Annalie! She brought along all sorts of materials - fabrics, threads, needles, and even some bags. To help us get started, we each had the choice to make a cuddly teddy bear or decorate a bag with our own creative designs. In the coming weeks, we’ll be making festive Christmas decorations and even designing our very own clothes - We’re really excited to see how they turn out!

Photography

– Miss Kaye (Business Manager and artist in residence)

My goal is to pass on my passion and love for photography to the Year 6 students. We photographed still lives, consciously focusing on one aspect and not the riffraff around the edges. We paid particular attention to light and how it can be used to impact photographs.

"I’ve learnt that life is brighter than a flashlight! We’ve been experimenting taking photos with torches." – Dimitra

"A photo shows more than just lights, it shows meaning." – Khaleesi

"Every photo you take, you get a memory." – Leo D.

Architecture

As part of the Architecture elective, our Year 6 students had the wonderful opportunity to learn from our talented parents, Jo and Harry. They introduced the students to a range of architectural styles found around Port Melbourne on a sketch walk – seeing architectural details firsthand. They then applied their new knowledge to design their own spaces.
