Celebrating our Year 6 students

Our Year 6 students are approaching the end of their primary school journey, and we thought it is a wonderful time to look back and celebrate their experiences at Port Melbourne Primary School.
Celebrating our exceptional Year 6 cohort
– Miss Elara
Every now and then, you come across a group of students who feel like one big family, bound by friendship, laughter, and care for one another. This Year 6 cohort has been nothing short of exceptional. They approach every challenge with determination, respect, and a genuine sense of teamwork. Most importantly, they are kind, curious, respectful, and resilient, qualities that will carry them far beyond the classroom. As they prepare to take their next steps, our hearts are full of pride and excitement for all the amazing things that lie ahead.
After three years of watching you grow into the incredible people you are today, I wish you all the very best as you begin the next chapter of your lives. While saying goodbye will be very challenging, I can’t want to see what is next for you all. Don’t be strangers, you will always be a special part of our school community!
Student primary school reflection
– Jackson, Tahli, Essie, Bibi
These past seven years of primary school have been an incredible journey. Even though the COVID pandemic affected some of our time at school, we never took a single moment for granted. We’ve loved getting to know everyone, whether they’ve been with us from the very start or joined us along the way. We’ve enjoyed every camp - complete with chocolate mousse competitions - every gala day, whether we won or lost, and every special moment that has made our time at PMPS unforgettable. – Tahli, Essie, Bibi
The Year 6’s have been exceptional role models for the school community and the younger students. This year has been full of fun, with gala days, special events, and memorable weeks, giving this cohort the ultimate Year 6 experience. One of the biggest highlights has been the camp in term one, but we are also looking forward to our end of year excursion! – Jackson
Camp
–Louca and Louan
In Term 1, we went on an exciting camp to Billabong Ranch in Echuca! We had so much fun riding horses around the ranch and even went on a night bushwalk. There were plenty of games too, like lassoing each other and chasing each other around. One of the highlights was orientation - we had to use a map and compass to find letters on trees in a dense forest. It was tricky but really fun! We also learned about different dangerous animals, practiced first aid, and enjoyed activities like mini golf, rock climbing, and frisbee golf. Overall, it was an amazing camp full of adventure, learning, and lots of laughs!
Gala Days
Term: T-ball
– Tim
T-Ball Gala Day was an exciting opportunity to have fun, stay active, and work as a team! We were split into teams and played against three other schools in our group. The morning started with dewy grounds, but by afternoon, the sun was shining, and the balls – and laughter – were flying everywhere (even my bat made an appearance a few times!). Overall, everyone had an amazing time, whether it was catching up with friends from other schools or enjoying a break from the usual classroom routine.
Term 2: Footy
– Charlie and Jack
It was a beautiful, warm day, and everyone was excited to play footy with their friends and test their skills. We played touch footy—so no tackling—but the games were still full of fun and energy! Over the day, we played four matches against Docklands, Albert Park, South Melbourne, and our own team, with breaks in between to strategize and prepare. Everyone got a chance to play in their favourite positions. It was an exciting, fun-filled day, and we all had an amazing time!
Term 3: Rugby
– Atlas and Jude
In Term 3, the Year 5s and 6s took part in a Touch Rugby Gala Day, competing against schools including Middle Park Primary, Albert Park Primary, Docklands Primary, South Melbourne Primary, and more. We had a lot of fun playing rugby - it was touch, so no tackling was allowed! It was an incredible day, and everyone had a great time, no matter the results.
STEM Day
– Thomas and Rhys
On STEM Day, we had a blast combining creativity and learning! We baked bread from scratch, adding raisins and pepitas, shaping them like animals of our choice. In Minecraft Education, we built our own versions of the Eiffel Tower. We also held a paper plane competition, testing aerodynamics and flight distance – congratulations to Lucas, who won with his incredible plane! STEM Day was both fun and educational, giving everyone a chance to explore, create, and experiment.
Bastille Day
– Alex L
On Bastille Day, everyone dressed up as French people or French-themed objects, making the day colourful and fun! We watched Ratatouille and had the chance to taste lots of different cheeses. My favourites were the blue cheese and smoked cheddar, though there were so many delicious options to try. Bastille Day was a fantastic celebration full of tasty treats, amazing costumes, and lots of fun!
Book Week
– Anika, Ava W, Ella M
PMPS’s 2025 Book Week took place in Week 5 of Term 3 and was a huge success! We were fortunate to be supported by Port Melbourne’s Mary Martin Bookshop, with a range of books available for sale from Monday to Wednesday. Students joined in exciting events, including Monday’s dress-up day and parade, as well as the annual writing and drawing competition based on the theme Book and Adventure. Prizes were awarded, and students celebrated the magic of reading while exploring new worlds through books!
Greek Basketball
–Levi and Reuben
In Term 3, we had the incredible opportunity to visit the Greek basketball team Panathinaikos B.C. We watched their training session and were lucky enough to meet two of their star players. We met Kendrick Nunn, the EuroLeague MVP for the 2024–25 season, and Nikos Rogkavopoulos, a talented forward and fan favourite. Visiting the newly opened training centre, Courtside, was an unforgettable experience for everyone who went!
Cohort sports
– Alex H, Xander, Khan and Henry R
Since Term 2, Year 6 students have been participating in weekly Friday afternoon sports. Activities have included basketball, netball, soccer, AFL, and more. Students were divided into teams labeled A–H, competing against a different team each week. Teams earned 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss, with extra points awarded for teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect. Overall, the sessions have been fun, engaging, and a great way to stay active while building teamwork skills.
