Students learnt that they could make their own maracas at home with an empty plastic bottle filled with rice, lentils, beads, buttons, or pasta!

The Year 1 students have learnt about the difference between beat and rhythm throughout the year. To consolidate their understanding, students sang and played the song, ‘Rain, Rain.’ They are creating their own beat and rhythm chart for the song.

Students also thought about the actions and expressions to match the lyrics. They were asked how they would feel if it was raining and they weren’t allowed to play.

The Year 2 students have applied their knowledge of the pitch and rhythm to play the well-known nursery rhyme, ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb.’ The chroma note colours for the notes and the fruit and vegetable beats help students to play melodies in a simple way.

The Year 4 students listened to a clip of Julie Andrews in the movie, ‘Sound of Music’ to discover that the solfege style of learning to sing is used all over the world. Then students applied their knowledge of the notes on the C Major scale for a note review.

Year 5 students have been studying the blues genre of music which originated in the deep South with the African American slaves lamenting their hard labour.

Students have applied their knowledge of pitch to play notes melodically (one at a time) and harmonically (two or three notes played together) to perform the chords C, F and G to play the famous 12 Bar Blues.

Now using their understanding of this form of music, they will create their own blues lyrics which will tell us what has made them sad and blue!

The Year 6 students are learning about playing the melody with chords. Students played a traditional song, ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ and used their knowledge of pitch, rhythm and beat to play this piece on tuned percussion and keyboards. We will be adding chords to add texture and depth to this performance. Awesome job team!
