Reading/Writing

This term, students will be immersed in a range of picture story books and develop a love of reading. They will explore the classroom Library and the school Library and take home a book every week.  Here are some ways you can make reading fun at home:

  1. Develop family reading routines at home
  2. Read what interests your child
  3. Try books that reflect your daily experiences
  4. Let your child choose the book
  5. Reread your child's favorites
  6. Encourage storytelling
  7. Choose different spots to read

During Reading, students will be practising the importance of looking at each page in their book and thinking about what is happening on each page. They will make predictions about what will happen in the story before reading (by looking at the front cover – the picture and title) and what they already know about the topic or theme.

Later in the term, students will begin to take 'Decodable' books home. This is the Book Bag students will use to take their 'Decodable' books home. This is an essential item that students will use not only in Prep, but for the rest of their school years. If you haven't ordered one yet, you can click here to place an order through RHSport.

We kindly ask that our Preps bring in the black bag that they took home during their transition day last year. They will need this bag to borrow a book from our school Library. This will need to be returned each week to borrow a new book.

Students will be given opportunities to write about things they know a lot about and build on their belief that “they are brave writers with amazing ideas to share”. They will be encouraged to draw their pictures, add a label and have a go at saying the words they want to write, listen to the sounds they hear and write the letters that make those sounds.

We encourage our students to have a go, even if this means writing strings of letters. It is important to think about what they are going to write, rehearse it out loud and then have a go writing it. We celebrate all efforts and attempts.
