From the Archives

Welcome to “From the Archives” for 2024. This section of the newsletter remembers the history, and stories, of St. Peter’s College over the last thirty years. A special welcome is extended to the Year 7 cohort, new students, and their families.  St. Peter’s College, distinct from St Francis Xavier Junior Campus, was opened on March 6 th 1994.  The student leadership group were regarded as House Captains. However, as the Houses were students grouped for sport and other activities, the House Captains, pictured below, did not function in the same role as the House Captains do in 2024. The uniform was still the blue of St Francis Xavier although the basic maroon of St. Peter’s College had been adopted.  The House Captains of 1994

He returned, for a short period, in 2002.

What do you see as your role as a leader?

As a leader in 2024 I want to show people that what you can achieve is not limited by the number or score on a page but that you can do anything you put your mind to. Public speaking and the thought of doing an oral presentation in class always made me anxious so running for College Captain was a personal challenge to me.

As a student that struggles with learning difficulties, I know that it can be hard to find motivation when all of your role models that are doing things, you feel you can only dream of, are A+ students.

I want to be that role model, I want to be a person for younger students to look up to, not because of my grades but for how I treat fellow students and support them in their journey.

As a Year 7 student I never saw anyone with learning difficulties having leadership roles at the College, or at least people that were open about their difficulties. I see my role as a leader is to be me. I want younger kids that are like me and that don't feel like school is for them to know that we all have our strengths and that it is okay if you don’t know what they are yet.

What is one of the positives about being a student at St. Peter's College?

Positives about being a student at St Peter’s College would be being able to be yourself, whether that's through being able to practice your religion or showing who you are through creative avenues like music and art or through writing in English, there is something for everyone and St Peter’s College helps you find your something.

What are your goals as Captain in 2024?

My goal as College Captain for 2024 is to show people that it doesn't matter if you don't have a perfect score, if you can put your mind to something you can do it, you just have to find the thing you are good at.

I want to be the best version of myself through following my personal goals of passing my VCE and continuing my Personal Training and Photography business.

I also want to be the type of person people feel comfortable coming up to when they are struggling with personal things and as a person to look to as a source of inspiration.

How will you live this statement through your leadership role?

I will make sure that just because I am College Captain now doesn't mean I change who I am.

I will stay the same person, one that has a little more confidence in her voice now, but still the same person that aims to be a friendly face in the crowd and a person younger students look up to and see that being kind and caring for each other makes us all happier and more successful in our school life and in the future.

What do you see as your role as a leader?

Leadership in itself is a pretty complicated thing, but to me it’s simply caring about, prioritizing, nurturing relationships with, and inspiring those that you lead. Giving real thoughts of their needs, and sometimes, if need be, placing them above your own. That’s how I would like to lead, putting enthusiasm, energy, and zeal into my role this year so that those that I lead can leave 2024 with bright memories thanks in part to my actions.

What is one of the positives about being a student at St. Peter's College?

Too many to count. But the biggest thing I think is the people, the school’s such a welcoming environment all around, and when the going gets tough and you’ve maybe got a SAC coming up the next day or too much homework for you to handle, it’s always your friends that keep you going, and the amazing teachers that help you along the way, both of which are in spades here at the College.

What are your goals as Captain in 2024?

I want to build on the legacy of my predecessors by keeping some of the amazing initiatives that they started (such as significant mens/womens breakfast etc) while also promoting new initiatives that can make the students' experience at St Peter’s College better. I don’t want to be over ambitious, because there’s only so much I can do, but if I can strive to make the experience of the student body even a little better, and leave behind a positive legacy, I will have done my job well.

How will you live this statement through your leadership role?

This verse has honestly been one of my absolute favorites in scripture - and one that I’ve pondered about a lot! St Thomas Aquinas said that “justice is to do unto others what they deserve”, and so I will do my best to give the students I lead what they deserve; to listen, to care, and to inspire! Humility is another word I care about a lot, as C.S Lewis said, “humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking less about yourself”. So this year, I’m going to try to do what those that I lead truly need, and be willing to work well in a team and with the Student Executive, remembering that I can’t do everything on my own.

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day is a global initiative to raise awareness of online safety issues. The eSafety Commissioner leads the initiative in Australia. We educate people about online safety risks, like online abuse, how to be safe online and where to go for help.  This Safer Internet Day we're encouraging you to take three simple actions when approaching online safety: Connect. Reflect. Protect.

Connect safely by keeping apps and devices secure and reviewing your privacy settings regularly.

Reflect on how your actions online may affect others or your safety.

Protect yourself and others by visiting eSafety.gov.au to find out how to stay safe online and report online abuse.  By doing these things and sharing the Connect. Reflect. Protect message, we can work towards making every day a Safer Internet Day.
