Week 7 & 8 Updates
This fortnight in Music, students have continued developing their instrumental skills and exploring new musical challenges across a range of instruments.
Grade Prep students have finished their keyboard unit and should be very proud of their achievements. After learning to identify notes on the keyboard, students learned to play 'Hot Cross Buns' by following colour-coded sheet music. They are now ready to begin an exciting new unit on the ukulele.

Grade 1 students have started their ukulele lessons and have been enthusiastically exploring their new instrument. Students have been practising different strumming patterns using up and down strokes, learning the names and sounds of the strings, and discovering how frets change the pitch of notes. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they begin their ukulele journey.

Grade 2, 3 and 5 students have continued progressing through their ukulele units. After mastering the basics of strumming, strings and frets, students have begun playing songs using chords and TAB notation. Their growing independence and perseverance have been impressive as they tackle increasingly challenging pieces.

Grade 4 students have been thoroughly enjoying their recorder lessons. They have learned about recorder anatomy, correct posture and hand position, and effective blowing techniques. Students have successfully played the notes B, A and G and have used recorder charts to explore additional notes. They have now progressed to learning 'Au Clair de la Lune' and 'Ode to Joy', reading from both sheet music and recorder charts to support their playing.

Grade 6 students have continued working through their choice units, practising songs on their chosen instrument - keyboard, ukulele or guitar. Students are developing their skills at their own pace and demonstrating increasing independence as they work towards mastering their selected pieces.
It has been fantastic to see students embracing new instruments, building their musical knowledge and growing in confidence as young musicians.
Students have been learning about the different athletic events that are held in the olympics. Depending on the weather we have had students participate in long jump, 400m sprint, shot put or high jump.

The 5/6 students have been participating in interschool sport every Friday morning. The mornings have been a fun successful time where the students have been playing against other schools in the district.

A reminder that the 4-6 Athletics day is on Thursday June 18th being held at Keilor Athletics Park. We are still looking for parent volunteers so if you can help out please send me an email at dane.barun@education.vic.gov.au

In week 7, Preps had fun recreating an esqueleto (skeleton)in their cuaderno de español (Spanish workbook), practising their fine motor skills and following the instructions in Spanish:
-Doble pagina (double page)
-Cortar (cut)
-Pegar (glue)
-Aqui (here)
-Cuaderno de español (Spanish workbook)
-Escribir (Write)
In week 8, Preps used the parts of the body vocabulary learnt to design a monster: "Mi Monstruo" (My Monster).
They chose how many of each part of the body their monstruo would have out of:
-Cabeza (head)
-Piernas (legs)
-Pies (feet)
-Ojos (eyes
-Orejas (ears)
-Boca (mouth)
-Nariz (nose)

Students in years 1 and 2 have built on their vocabulary to make sentences using:
"Cuando hace ____ me pongo en ___"
(When it is _(weather)_ I put _(clothing)_ on _(body part)_).
They learnt parts of the body and made new sentences with new clothing including:
"Cuando hace sol me pongo sombrero en la cabeza."
(When it is sunny, I put a hat on my head)

Students in years 3 and 4 have almost finished working in pairs to make a class calendario. They have worked hard to create designs to match their allocated month's season and also included the class's birthdays using "cumpleaños de ____" or "cumple de ___".
Students in years 5 and 6 have almost finished their end-of-term project about an allocated Spanish-speaking country. Students have written and rehearsed full sentences preparing to present their projects to leadership in the next couple of weeks.
Students have also been introduced to assessment rubrics to help guide and keep themselves on track while working on their projects.
I have seen so much creativity and effort displayed and am so excited for the school community to see the finished products.

As part of our National Reconciliation Week learning, students explored the work of contemporary Aboriginal artist Otis Hope Carey.
Inspired by Otis' 2026 National Reconciliation Week artwork, Gaagal (meaning "Ocean" in the Gumbaynggirr language), students worked together to create a collaborative artwork. Drawing inspiration from Otis' use of flowing lines, circles and ripple patterns, students created individual pieces that were combined into one larger artwork.
The finished piece represents connection to our community and the importance of water, while reflecting the message that small actions can create positive ripples of change. Through this project, students explored themes of belonging, respect, connection and reconciliation.
Do you want to come in and be a classroom helper?
Are you able to do some framing of work for the art show?
If it’s a yes please come and have a chat with me at school pick up, I am always out on yard duty at this time.
Also I am looking for artists, performers and musicians within the school community please, please reach out if you are one as I really want to involve you in this year's artshow.
Thank you very much
