Pentecost - The Birthday of our Church

Gallery Image

On Sunday, we will celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. Often referred to as the “Birthday of the Church,” this feast marks the moment when the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus’ followers and gave them the Gifts of the Spirit. These include; Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. These gifts encouraged his disciples to share his message with people of every culture and language. Gifts we also receive when we are gifted with the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Today, Pentecost reminds us of the strength we find in community and the importance of welcoming and including others. Many churches use this time to reflect on how the Holy Spirit continues to work in our world — through acts of justice, compassion and the courage to stand up for what is right.

Who is Generation Alpha & What makes them different?

Gallery Image

Generation Alpha — those born from 2010 onward, our students and your children — are growing up in a world that is faster, louder and more connected than ever before. As the first generation raised entirely in the 2020s, they are shaped by global change, rapid advances in technology and a growing focus on wellbeing, sustainability and inclusion. What makes them stand out is not just the tools they use, but the mindset they bring. They are curious, adaptable and confident enough to question the world around them. They are also the most diverse and globally aware generation yet, already influencing how schools operate, how families communicate and how communities grow.

Generation Alpha & Technology?

Generation Alpha are more than digital natives — they are AI natives. They are growing up with smart assistants, personalised learning apps and creative tools that respond instantly to their ideas. They see technology as something to work with, not just something to use. Even with their comfort on screens, they are rediscovering hands-on creativity through robotics, STEM activities, craft projects and backyard experiments. They want to make things they can hold, not just things they can tap.

How is their social world different?

Their social world is just as dynamic. Gen Alpha forms friendships across neighbourhoods, schools and online spaces. They move easily between different cultures, perspectives and identities. They communicate through emojis, voice notes, short videos and shared digital spaces. This global awareness makes them empathetic, but also more selective. They value honesty, clarity and respect from the adults and institutions around them.
