Learning Update

From Mr Collins 3-6
In English we are now studying hydrid texts. the kids have been reading a variety of books with the aim of being both entertained and educated at the same time. They are now drafting their own hybrid texts on a chosen animal with the aim of telling an engaging story while entwining facts about the animal for the reader to learn. We have completed our PAT Reading Assessment with the kids all giving it their absolute best. A reminder to keep reading with your kids at home, it is making a world of difference.
There are a afew different focuses happening in maths at the moment including fractions, multiplication & Division, and telling the time. Teaching the kids to tell the time has become more difficult over the years as they don't have the regular exposure to analogue clocks like they used to. We are taking it slow and building all of the kids up from wherever their current level is. Feel free to ask them what the time is so they can continue to practice.
Continuing our investigation of chemical change in our Integrated Studies sessions, this week we made Ooblek. Interestingly enough, this crazy substance did not make a chemical change, and is completely reversible. We did however make a mess of the room that may have caused a chemical change in our carpets...
Last week the grade 3-6's went to the Colbinabbin Recreation Reserve to take part in the Campaspe Cluster Winter Sports Day. I love watching the kids join in with kids from other schools to play different sports. As you can see from the photos, the kids had the best time. We are still liasing with the other schools around cluster teams for division competitions so we will make contact with you if your child has been selected.

Literacy
This week, the little room completed a review of all the sounds we have been learning throughout Term 2. It has been a great opportunity to celebrate what students know and identify any areas that may need a little more practice. We have also been learning about working memory, how it helps us learn, and why it is important to minimise distractions. Students have enjoyed discussing how new learning moves into our long-term memory. It has been wonderful to put into practice some recent professional learning completed with Dr Nathanial Swain.
On 27 May, we also participated in National Simultaneous Storytime, listening to Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller. Students enjoyed colouring while following along with the story and later discussed its important message about believing in yourself and not underestimating others.
Numeracy
We took a short break from our cool maths groups this week to focus on the relationship between addition and subtraction, using our friends Gus the Plus and Linus the Minus to help us learn. Students have been challenged with more complex problems and have shown great persistence and confidence when tackling new concepts. It has been fantastic to see students willing to have a go, think creatively, and not be afraid to get a little “messy” while solving maths problems!

2026 Prep Transition Day
On Tuesday morning, we welcomed our first group of 2026 Prep students for their transition visit. The morning included a school tour led by our current little room students, a reading of Room on the Broom, and a range of fun activities. It was wonderful to see our current students acting as role models, helping our visitors feel welcome and excited about starting school. We are very proud of the kindness, confidence, and leadership they showed throughout the morning.
