Class Updates and Reminders

Messages from our Learning Levels...

Upcoming Whole School Dates

Prep

Dates to Remember:

  • Friday 9 August: Prep 100 Days of School Celebration

Reminders:

Homework and Library Bags

It is important to encourage a strong homework routine in order for your child to experience success in their learning. Every week, Prep students are expected to complete one Mathseeds lesson. Please ensure you are monitoring your child whilst they are completing their lesson so they only complete one lesson.

Library will continue to be on Fridays like last term. If your child does not bring in their library bag, they will not be able to swap books. Also, please fill in the reader diary so your child's teacher can see their at home reading habits.

iPad

Please keep in mind that iPads need to be brought to school everyday so your child can access all activities.

Year 1

  • Tuesday 3 September: Dream City In-Visit

In Year One, using iPads is integral to our student's learning. Please support your child in making sure their iPad comes to school fully charged.  We do not want any child missing out on the educational activities that involve using the devices.

PE Day for Term 3

Please take note of what day your child has PE. Please encourage your child to wear their sports uniform on the day they have PE.

Homework

Thank you for your continued support in instilling a strong homework routine for your child. The expectation is 1 lesson of Mathseeds completed a week (Sunday - Saturday). Please remember that Sunday starts the new week.

The other homework expectation is reading 4 nights for 15 minutes. This is to be written in your child's diary and signed. Diaries should come to school every day.

Devices:

Our Year 2 students really enjoy engaging with our programs (Maths Invaders and Reading Eggspress just to name a few). When your child forgets their iPad, it is on a low percentage or comes to school flat, this restricts their engagement. Thank you for your continued support in creating a home routine with your child which involves charging their iPad and placing the iPad in their bag.

Devices

Please ensure your child charges their device each night to 100% so their learning is not disrupted. Students should not change any settings, such as the background, or download any further programs onto their iPad.

Term 3 Accelerated Reader RangesThis term, students took their Star Reader test, which provided them with their new Accelerated Reader (AR) range. This range helps them find books that are just right for their reading level—not too easy and not too hard. Once they finish a book, they take a quiz at school to check their understanding and earn points.

We ask for your support in encouraging your child to read books within their AR range at home and to take the quiz at school the next day.

The Year 5 students completed their STAR Reading test last week. They have now all received their new ZPD and set their reading volume points targets. Reminders:

Homework:

Students are expected to complete a minimum of 200 activity points on Mathletics each week. We recommend students designate Monday as "Mathletics night" so that this homework is completed straight away and then done for the week. Students look for a challenge can complete up to 1000 points each week to earn a certificate

Students are also expected to read for 20-30 minutes each night, record their reading in their diary and have it signed by an adult. This helps students work towards hitting their Accelerated Reading targets at school. If your child has lost their diary, new ones are available for purchase for a small fee in the school office

Smart Watches:

Please note that it is a school policy that Smart Watches of any kind are not allowed at South Melbourne Primary School, in order to support students in focusing on their learning throughout the day. This includes any watch that has the ability to connect to data or the internet, even if it can be turned off or has a 'school mode'. Students may wear a Smart Watch to school and then take it off to put in the phone drawer on our learning level.

Hair:

It is a school requirement and expectation that if your child's hair is longer than shoulder length they are to wear it up using a hair tie.

Thank you all so much for your continued support.
