Autism Awareness

At yesterday's Secondary Assembly, we had a special focus on Autism Awareness.

Mrs Klaver shared information on what autism is and how is may impact individuals.

She emphasised that as a community, we recognise that each person is made in the image of God. While we are all different, we are all precious to Him.

Mrs Klaver interviewed Vienna from Year 10 about her experience of living with autism.

We also heard from Esther from Year 11. Please take some time to read Esther's address to the Assembly, attached below.

We thank these students for their courage in sharing their experiences with others. They are an inspiration!

QUEST Skill Sets

Last week in Quest we had our second session of our Quest Skill Sets. This is a new initiative introduced to Quest this year to build some hands-on skills and qualifications into the program and support the student’s creativity.  It is important to remember a key component of learning is the opportunity to stop and reflect on what occurred, what was achieved, and how could we improve. It is the same when developing a new skill, we need time to practice, build muscles, grow in knowledge, master techniques, and accumulate the wisdom to know when to use what, and where.

For our first rotation of Skill Sets students were given the opportunity to choose from either:

  • First Aid
  • Jewellery making
  • Fibre craft
  • Navigation/orienteering

Once selected, students participate in their chosen skill set 4 times over the term, accumulating a total of 12 hours of practice in that particular skill. This time also contributes to their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, and in some cases, as with First Aid for instance, they receive a nationally recognised qualification.

We will have a second round of skills sets and skill set options in Term 3 and we can’t wait to see what the student produce next. Keep an eye out at the upcoming Maker Market items the students may have produced with their newly acquired skills!

Secondary Cross Country at Symmons Plains

Year 7-10 cross country champions competed in the Statewide cross country championship last Thursday, 13th June. All competitors should be commended on their motivation and the way they encouraged their other team members.

All of our students who participated and finished such a tough course did a fantastic job, often competing against more than 200 runners in their age group.

Big congratulations to Elsie Holland who finished 15th in her age group!
