What is Energy (What is Electricity)?

How Might We Create a More Sustainable Electrical Future?

This Inquiry Unit has a Physical Science and Design and Technologies focus. Our students will learn about energy and electricity. They will learn about and create circuits with various components. They will learn about energy and its various sources. In groups, the students will research and design an energy-efficient house and document this in a design journal. They will then build model aspects of their energy efficient house design and this work will be displayed at an Inquiry Expo at the end of the term.

We want students to be curious about what energy is, how it is used and where it comes from.  We want them to :

  • Understand how to construct an electrical circuit, series and parallel
  • Make connections between the generation and consumption of electricity and the potential environmental impacts
  • Make connections between the use of electricity and the impact on the environment and understand that changes need to be made to allow for a more sustainable future
  • Communicate their ideas on how we can make positive changes to our society, with regard to our power consumption
  • Collaborate to create an energy-efficient house using passive design solutions
  • Communicate their knowledge of sustainability, power consumption and carbon footprint.

An expo of student understanding has been tentatively scheduled for Wed 18 September. This will be confirmed closer to the date.
