Explore the Learning in Grade 2
And just like that we are half way through the year! Thankyou to all the families that came along on Wednesday to join in our 'Celebration of Learning'. It was so wonderful to see so many families at school. The smiles on the students' faces said it all, they just love sharing their learning with you.
It's been another busy term and we are so proud of every single one of our Grade 2 students for the effort the effort they have put in this term. After 11 weeks, we think it's safe to say there are some tired students who have earned a well deserved break over the next two weeks.
This term our students have learnt about:
Numeracy:
In Term 2, students cycled through a range of topics from the Measurement & Geometry, Statistics & Probability and Number & Algebra curriculum. They explored how to measure the mass and capacity of everyday objects and learnt how to read a clock and calendar. Through a range of warm up games and number talks, the students also focused on skip counting, place value and placing numbers up to 100 on a number line. Later in the term, the students explored collecting data from surveys and presenting their information in simple graphs and tables. Finally, the Grade 2 students continued to build their fluency in the four processes, especially in using strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems.
Literacy:
In Literacy, Students have focussed on improving their phonemic awareness (ability to hear sounds in spoken words) and phonics (letter-sound correspondence) during daily instruction and practise. They have also participated in daily practice of fluency, where they have worked with their fluency partner to read aloud using both decodable texts and fluency passages to focus on improving their accuracy, rate and expression. During comprehension lessons, they have learnt about and applied various strategies such as summarising and making connections. When discussing texts, students have used sentence stems to guide their responses and build confidence when speaking aloud and sharing their thoughts. Students have explicitly been taught syntax (sentence structure, grammar and punctuation) and used this knowledge in writing when completing their narratives and information reports.
Inquiry:
In Term 2, students learned about the ‘History of Barwon Heads’. They inquired about important buildings, landmarks and people, and why they are so significant to their town. This included learning about the history of the Barwon Heads bridge, The Barwon Heads Golf Club and the shipwreck “Earl of Charlemont”. They visited the Lobster Pot and discovered its previous use as a dance hall. Students finished off the term by learning to perform some of the traditional Australian dances that were showcased at the Lobster Pot in decades past.
