SENIOR School Update

Dear Parents/Carers and Students

Welcome back to Term 3!

Term 3 marks a significant milestone in the academic journey of our Senior School students. It is a term filled with both excitement and focus as the Class of 2025 enters their final full term of secondary schooling. Simultaneously, our Year 11 cohort steps into an important phase of planning, as they prepare to select their Year 12 courses for 2026.

We hope all our Year 11 and 12 students, staff and families enjoyed a restful and rejuvenating winter break and are ready to embrace a short but purposeful Term 3.

Celebrating 100 Days of Year 12

We kicked off the term with a much-loved Senior Campus tradition, 100 Days of Year 12! Students embraced the “100 Years Old” dress-up theme and celebrated with a lively lunchtime event featuring bingo in the Presentation Space and a BBQ. It was a great opportunity to acknowledge their hard work so far and build momentum for the final leg of their journey.

Year 11: Planning for 2026

Throughout Term 3, our Year 11 students will continue their engagement in the Careers Education program, embedded into their Period 6 Optima Pastoral Care classes. These sessions - building on work from Terms 1 and 2 - play a crucial role in helping students plan a Year 12 program that aligns with their goals and aspirations.

Key dates for Year 11 students and families:

  • Thursday 31 July – VCE/VCE-VM Tertiary & Subject Expo Students can attend during Periods 5 and 6 if they do not have scheduled classes. Families are warmly invited to join their child after school between 3.30pm and 5.00pm on the Senior Campus.

  • Monday 11 August – Edval Logins Distributed Students will receive their individual login details and code to enter preliminary subject selections.

  • Friday 15 August – Preliminary Course Selections Due Students are required to enter their course preferences in Edval ahead of interviews.

  • Monday 18 and Wednesday 20 August – Course Selection Interviews Families can book interviews via Compass. Each student will meet with their assigned Course Counsellor to confirm subject choices, check prerequisites, and align their selections with post-school goals.

Year 12: Pathway Planning and VTAC Applications

Year 12 Optima classes this term are centred on finalising pathways beyond school, whether that be tertiary study, apprenticeships, training, or employment. From Monday 4 August 2025, students can begin submitting their VTAC applications for courses commencing in 2026. Important VTAC dates to note:

  • Monday 29 September 2025 (5.00pm): Timely applications close

  • Friday 10 October 2025 (5.00pm): SEAS and scholarship applications close

All deadlines can be found on VTAC’s Important Dates page, in the VTAC Year 12 Guide and here is a helpful resource for parents: Parents and caregivers

Students are not alone in this process. Our Optima Mentors and Careers Team are dedicated to providing individualised support every step of the way.

Glossary of key terms for Year 12 parents/carers:

  • VTAC is the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre: is a service that facilitates access to tertiary education and further study for our students in Victoria and beyond. They manage the applications, Special Entry Access Scheme and Scholarships. How to apply link: How to apply (vtac.edu.au)

  • Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS): covers a range of access and equity programs offered by different institutions. It is a single application that is sent to all of the courses students apply for. It helps institutions understand the full potential of a student by considering the circumstances they have experience. It allows institutions to grant special considerations for course entry, however it does not exempt them from meeting the institutional and course requirements. How does SEAS work video: https://vtac.edu.au/access/seas#seasvideo

  • Scholarships: are awarded for many reasons including financial disadvantage, difficult circumstances, the need to relocate to study, Indigenous Australians, community service and academic merit. Students can apply for scholarships through VTAC, through the institute they are applying to and the department.

VTAC run webinars for students (and their families) to support students to navigate the application system.  Please register for these webinars.  Please note that this is the same information which has been provided previously on our Careers Newsletters.

September Holiday Practice Exams

A reminder to families and students studying a Unit 3 & 4 subject: during the September holidays, the school will run compulsory Practice Examinations. These exams are a vital part of our senior academic program, offering students an authentic opportunity to prepare under conditions that replicate the final VCAA exams. Please prioritise attendance, this preparation is crucial. The Examination Timetable is available via Compass newsfeed.

Revision Workshops

At this time of year, it is worthwhile for our students studying a Unit 3 and 4 study to consider attending some revision workshops run by external providers. Our Frankston High School staff will run revision class, particularly during the Exam Revision week (Tuesday 21 October – Friday 24 October), however it can be of benefit to extend and diversify their study practice by seeking further revision opportunities. Subject teachers will have recommendations of particular companies that students are encouraged to explore.

Students are asked to double check their September Practice Exam schedule to avoid double bookings.

  • Access Education: This company offer a wide range of subjects that our students attend and have positive feedback to share. Students receive summary notes that are mailed to the school and then provided to students. We receive a discount for this company. Students can book in for these via Tina Thomas in the Senior Campus front office. Schedule can be viewed here: Exam Revision Lectures 2025 Archives - Access Education

  • ATAR Notes: This company have a range of free and live online revision lectures. The revision schedule is not yet released. Students can create an account to be notified when we release they release the schedule - Free Online VCE Head Start Lectures | ATAR Notes

  • Monash Virtual School offers free online revision workshops for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, General Maths, Methods, Specialist and Applied Computing: VCE Program - Monash Virtual School

  • TSFX VCE Exam Revision Lectures offer online VCE revision lectures for a variety of subjects. VCE Exam Revision Lectures

Supporting Students to Manage Academic Stress

As the pressure of subject selections, final assessments, and post-school decisions increases, it’s natural for students to experience some academic stress. We encourage students to:

  • Balance study with rest – quality sleep, healthy food, and regular exercise go a long way.

  • Break tasks into smaller steps – achievable goals help reduce overwhelm.

  • Stay connected – talk with friends, family, or trusted teachers if things feel too much.

  • Use school support systems – our Wellbeing Team, Careers Team, Year 12 Coordination Team, Year 12 teacher and Optima Mentors are here to help.

Encouraging healthy habits and seeking help early can make a significant difference in how students experience and manage the challenges of Term 3.
