Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon

Last Saturday was a huge day at Marist with us hosting senior tennis and all fixtures in rugby league and basketball. The college was a hive of activity with the courts and the fields enjoying great weather and a positive day of AIC competition.

The week started with our hockey team having a great 6-1 win in their first match of the Brisbane Schoolboys Hockey competition. On Saturday we came up against St Peters and Ambrose Treacy. In tennis we won seven ties with St Peters winning eight ties and there was a draw with the 1sts losing 8-0. Over in the Champagnat Centre we won 19 basketball matches and lost eight (six to St Peters and two in supplementary matches) with St Peters winning the 1sts 82-71. In our first ever full home round for rugby league we took on a mixture of St Peters and Ambrose Treacy. We had 10 wins and three losses with the 1sts having a bye. The 2nds defeated St Peters 1sts 54-14 and the 3rds defeated ATC 1sts 38-10.

This weekend we travel to St Patrick's College over at Shorncliffe. Check the draw carefully for venues.

Code of Conduct for Players – Representing with Integrity

As we move through another busy sporting season, it is timely to reflect on the importance of the AIC Code of Behaviour for Players. Representing the College is a privilege that comes with responsibility - not only to your teammates and coaches, but to the wider school community and the AIC competition.

At the heart of the AIC is a commitment to inclusion, respect, and sportsmanship. Our players are expected to uphold these values in every setting - on the field, in the stands, online, and in our day-to-day conduct.

This means showing humility in victory and grace in defeat. It means treating opponents, officials, and teammates with respect, regardless of the result. It means avoiding behaviours that damage the integrity of the game, whether through unsportsmanlike conduct, poor language, or negative online commentary.

Punctuality, correct uniform, and preparation are all small actions that show pride in your team and school. A handshake after the game, acknowledging the opposition and officials, is not just tradition, it is a reflection of the respect we aim to show in all interactions.

Our College supports all students in striving for excellence. But excellence is not only measured in wins and losses,  it is defined by how we play, how we behave, and how we represent our school. Let’s continue to get this right.

Basketball – Ms Samantha Davids

The hive was humming this weekend as MCA Basketball hosted its first home round of the season, welcoming both St Peters and ATC to our courts. The atmosphere was alive, electrified by the sound of bouncing balls, team spirit, and the relentless buzz of competition.

With all games played on home turf, the swarm truly showed out,19 out of our 32 teams walked away with sweet victoriesincluding impressive stings from the 5D, 6B, 10C, and 3rds teams!

Even in close losses, our players showed grit and stinger-worthy spirit. Every game offered valuable learning moments to sharpen our skills and swarm stronger into this week's training.

A huge thanks to our hive of supporters who came to cheer, clap, and create a hive of hype.

Zac Chapman: The 8As faced a tough St Peters squad on Saturday morning. After a slow start, the boys settled in and showcased some offensive sets that they had practised at training the day previously which resulted in some good shot attempts. After trailing for most of the game, the boys fought back in the fourth quarter to cut the lead down to four points before receiving some unfavourable calls from the referees which helped put the Peter’s boys up by eight as the clock hit zero. Every player contributed well and can all be proud of themselves for playing through adversity. Big shout out to Elliott McGregor for fitting into the team seamlessly and scoring some timely buckets. After an impressive showing on both ends of the court, Josh McLean has been awarded this week’s MVP honours.

Kaleb Irving: The 8Cs delivered a dominant performance against Peters this Saturday leading to a prominent victory of 73-2. The team showcased teamwork, passing, shooting as well as overwhelming support for their teammates, It was an amazing performance all round and a well-deserved win.

Round 2 vs St Peters – Mr James Lymer- 1st V Coach

After a heartbreaking finish to a gutsy comeback against Iona College, the 1st V team returned home determined to secure their first AIC win against St Peter’s. With two of our starters being away all week due to illness, it was impressive to see other step up when needed most. A fantastic atmosphere fuelled the start to the game, jumping out to a 12-5 lead early.

Our shots didn’t come as easy in the second quarter though, with Peters weathering the storm and making some timely shots, jumping out to a double-digit lead at the half. At the break, the message was clear: tighten up defensively and be more patient when executing in the halfcourt. The team responded well, matching Peters bucket for bucket and keeping the game within reach heading into the forth.

The group battled to the end. Ultimately, credit goes to St Peter’s for their composure and execution down the stretch, closing out the contest 82–71. While the result wasn’t what we envisioned, I'm encouraged with the adjustments that were made and how we competed. This group remains hungry and committed to playing our brand of basketball at St Pats this weekend.

A huge thank you to all the parents and students who came out to support, The Hive’s energy in the Champagnat Centre was buzzing from start to finish. We look forward to your ongoing support for the rest of the season.

Rugby League - Mr Lachlan Gough

Round 2 of the AIC Rugby League season was hosted on our ovals here at Marist last weekend. It was a bye round for our First XIII and games for other age divisions were scheduled between either St Peters or Ambrose Treacy.

It is wonderful to see the new home and away draw will give our College more hosting of Rugby League games every two weeks with all teams from Year 5 to 12 playing at home.

Our MCA teams had extremely strong showings including - our MCA 2nd XIII defeating St Peters 1st XIII 54-14, Year 10As winning 48-10, Year 8As defeated St Peters 56-6 and our Year 7As versus ATC with a 24-4 win. Team of the week was the 2nds who played exceptionally well to defeat St Peters 1sts in a high-quality performance. Well done boys and coaches Chris and Malik.

This coming Saturday MCA play away at St Patrick's College Shorncliffe.

Hockey - Ms Kathryn Badini

Term 3 is hockey season, and we are back with a vengeance this year after making it all the way to the finals for the last two years in a row. Our first game was against Brisbane State High School last Tuesday afternoon. What unfolded was a nice win but still room to unite as a team. Hockey is an unusual sport given that we only have one team, so the make-up is club players from Years 8 - 12 as well as always trying to include some new players. The coming trainings will be important to bind us as a team.

Special mention to Daniel Thirgood who scored a hat trick, Fletcher Cabot, Luke Keir and Damon Johnson who scored one a piece, and Jordan Pratt for his first time in goals. Final result was 6-1 to us. This week we have a double header - St Patricks on Wednesday and St Edmunds on Friday.

Swimming

Mr James Boyce - Director of Swimming

Congratulations to our swimmers who proudly represented the College at the School Sport Australia National Championships last week:

    • 2nd – 14 Years 100m Backstroke
    • 4th – 13–14 Years 200m Individual Medley
    • 6th – 14 Years 50m Backstroke

Well done, boys, on your outstanding efforts and achievements on the national stage.

We will be holding a Swimming Team Meeting on Wednesday 6 August during Second Break in the Draney Theatre. This important session will outline our plan for the upcoming AIC Swimming season, set expectations, and bring the team together as we prepare to go one better in 2026.

AIC news

Over the past few weeks, students across all year levels have been training hard, fine-tuning their skills in both singles and doubles play. The preseason trials were fiercely contested, showing the depth of talent we have across the board. From our experienced First IV representatives to the enthusiastic newcomers in Year 5, the spirit of school sport is well and truly alive.

This season, our focus is not just on winning matches, but on playing the right way — with sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience. Tennis is as much about decision-making and communication as it is about forehands and serves.

Our coaching team has been impressed by the commitment shown during training sessions and is confident that hard work will translate into strong results on match days.

We’re looking forward to seeing our players represent the school with pride each weekend. Whether they are battling through a long singles match or supporting their teammates from the sideline, every student plays a part in building our tennis culture.

Tennis Report – A Tough Day at St Peter’s.  Hamish Davidson Captain 1st IV

In what was always going to be a blockbuster match-up, a grand final in some respects, as our teams took to the courts against a strong St Peter’s outfit. The energy was high, the rallies were long, and the margins... razor thin.

The doubles matches were particularly thrilling — with every set going down to the wire. We found ourselves locked in tiebreaks or battling it out to 7-5, but unfortunately, the scoreboard didn’t fall in our favour. A few points the other way and we might’ve been singing a very different tune.

In the singles, St Peter’s showed their depth and consistency, but to our boys’ credit, we kept fighting right to the final ball. There’s no questioning the effort — just a few key moments that didn’t go our way.

We now turn our focus to this weekend’s away match against St Pat’s, where we’ll be swinging for a strong comeback and looking to recapture our winning form.

AIC Round 2 recap

Clash of the Titans – A Spirited Fight Against St Peter’s

What loomed as the biggest test of the season saw us take on the powerhouse St Peter’s, who are well on track for back-to-back premierships. In a match-up that promised fireworks, our boys rose to the occasion and matched their fancied rivals point for point, set for set. Unfortunately, despite the fight, we walked away with nothing on the scoreboard – but the performance was anything but empty.

Every match was a tug-of-war. We had them on the ropes time and again, but it just wasn’t to be our day. Sometimes the scoreboard doesn’t tell the real story – and this was one of those days.

The Open teams had a tough day at the office, with only the 2nd IV managing to scrape a well-earned draw. Still, there's a silver lining worth celebrating as last year we won 5 of the 16 matches played against St Peter’s. This year? Seven wins and a draw. That’s a solid step forward and a sign we’re on the right path.

Now for the real headline... our Primary boys put on an absolute clinic! Undefeated. Unmatched. Unstoppable. They whitewashed the Peters teams in stunning style – and word is St Peter’s recruiters will be out in force before next season trying to even the ledger!

Other big wins came from our 10B, 9B and 8B teams, with 10B keeping their unbeaten record intact. Meanwhile, the 10A boys lost by just one game – that’s as close as it gets. Tough luck, fellas, but heads high – you gave it everything.

There were far too many standout performances to name them all, which is a brilliant problem to have. But let’s shine a light on the teams that delivered:2nd IV, 10B, 9B, 8B, 6A, 6B, 5A, and 5B – you’ve done the school proud and set the tone for a cracking season ahead.

With momentum building and belief growing, it’s safe to say – this season is just heating up.
