STEAM News

Foundation

Foundation students have been learning all about living things. Last week in STEAM they listened to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, and they planted their own bean plants in plastic cups. Students will monitor and observe the growth of the plants throughout the term.

Year 1/2

Year 1/2s have been observing our mealworms as part of their work on life cycles. Students learnt about the anatomy of a mealworm and used magnifying glasses for an up-close look at these fascinating tiny creatures. They will be carefully monitoring their growth throughout the term. We hope our mealworms will turn into darkling beetles by the end of term three.

Year 3

Year 3 students took part in setting up a mushroom growing kit which we were fortunate enough to receive from the Mushroom Growers’ Association of Australia. Students will be learning all about mushrooms, watering the kit regularly and taking part in a range of hands-on activities all about fungi.

Year 3 and Year 4

Years 3 and 4 were incredibly lucky this week to take part in the Tiny Tunnellers incursion. In the first part of the session students hypothesised, tested, observed, categorised, and then identified patterns around properties of materials, all through hands-on experimentation. The students use the learnings from their findings to make their own functional paper circuit to build a working, spinning mini tunnel boring machine model.

Year 6 Coding Club

Year 6s explored Sphero Bolts for their first session in senior coding club. Sphero is controlled via an app and it moves along the floor at different speeds. The students had fun taking part in an obstacle course race in the hall.
