5/6 Classroom News

5/6 News

It's been another busy fortnight in the 5/6 classrooms. This week 8 very lucky, very nervous and very excited students set off for 9 days at Somers Camp! This camp facilitates opportunities for students to develop their personal and social capabilities, helps in progressing their understanding of sustainable practices, enhances their ability to meet challenges and change by encouraging resilience.  We look forward to hearing about this wonderful opportunity when they arrive back.

Please be reminded that we have a few Compass notes that need signing - two for next week. One is our Science Week excursion to KyP-12 on Monday and Waranga Athletics on Friday. There is also our camp note to Cottage by the Sea with a few still needing approval. If your child has any worries or fears around this camp please come and see your classroom teacher.

Lastly a reminder to our Grade 6 parents that forms and payment for Graduation Bears is due

Boys To The Bush

On Tuesday the Boys To The Bush group went to the Bunnaloo feedlot. At the feedlot they make lots of different cow feed and look after over 10,000 cows! Shawn took us for a tour around the farm.  We got to role and slide around in a cow feed that looked like oats. We saw how they help sick cows and best of all we got mud all inside of our mentors car. After we explored the farm we enjoyed a delicious steak and sausage lunch before heading home. Thanks Boys To The Bush and Bendigo Bank for another great day!

On Tuesday, the Boys To The Bush group set out on a 45 minute drive into the bush where the Aboriginals used to go. Before we got into the fun part, he told us about a grey wood tree that the Aborigines took bark from to make small boats and baby carriers. They also made small plates out of the wood. After 20 minutes of talking about awesome Aboriginal stuff, we got into the fun part of making an Aboriginal camp site. We collected sticks, bark and leaves and made a fire. Then we had to find more big sticks to make a small hut. Once the fire died down a bit, we started cooking. We had also set up a thing where we threw spears and boomerangs. Then the food was done. Half of the boys got a sausage and I got a rissole and overloaded it with barbecue sauce. It still tasted good. We burnt a Jack Ginnivan footy card. Then we went back to the target and tried to hit it. A few people managed to hit it and we stayed there until 2 o clock. We went back while Adrian was drifting. He did about 5 drifts then we got back to school.

Campaspe Girls Football

Last Wednesday we headed to Jack Eddy oval to play girls footy. It was pretty cold and wet and there were puddles all over the field. Our first game was against Rochester and we lost by 1 point. It was a tough game with lots of tackling and goal scoring. Then our next game was against 208 and again it was a tough game and sadly we lost again. The rest of the games we played were very fun and tough. We versed St Augustine's, Twin Rivers and St Mary's. Our best game was against St Augustine's which was so fun and there were so many goals scored, the end score was 50-0. Thank you Mr Hogan for coaching and taking us to girls footy. It was the best!!

Brett's Hands On Learning

On Thursday, Brett's Hands On Learning group got to work quickly, moving tonnes of mulch into the combat course again!. Lucas and Billy filled about 8 trailer loads and 10 wheel barrows as Kane did heaps of wheel barrows and 3 trailer loads. Ezekiel didn't do any trailer loads but he moved 6 wheelbarrows full of mulch! We feel that was a great effort. Kane and Kayden made cheese burgers with onion, patties, bacon and cheese. They were yummo! Something that we found really hard today was backing the mower with the trailer, compared to the ease of using the wheel burrows. We used a lot of elbow grease to make things smooth today.  Thanks Brett for a great day.

To coincide with Keep Australia Beautiful week, Ezekiel, Billy, Lucas and Kane went to Hands On Learning on Thursday. Their job was to dig 60 holes to plant the trees for our combat course. The first hole was so hard. Ezekiel had to dig a very deep hole to give the new trees a great start. Brett jumped in with a crow bar and helped. Holes 2, 3 and 4 were a bit easier as the ground was wetter, Ezekiel just had to scrape the dirt and that was it. 15 minutes later 4 holes had been dug. Well, maybe it was a bit longer. It was hard to tell as Ezekiel was having so much fun. Ezekiel and Spencer cooked Angus beef sausages with bacon and cheese for everyone for lunch. The boys planted then watered the trees and put the guards around them to protect them. They all felt a bit tired but never gave up. The day went so fast, at the end we had to do overtime to complete the days work, we didn’t want to leave the job unfinished.

Josh's Hands On Learning

On Thursday, Spencer, Kayden, Alby and Aiden went to the garden for Hands on Learning. They  got to work straight away. First they fixed a broken chainsaw, put a new spark plug in and cleaned out the air filter. They put new oil the chainsaw and a whipper snipper. We didn't exactly fix the broken whipper snipper but we took heaps of screws and bolts out. We did everything we could but we only got it to started but couldn't put the end back on.  After that we put some filler on the body of the old vintage pedal car. Meanwhile Spencer and Ezekiel cooked lunch. We had big fat Angus snags that cook a lot slower than normal snags. They were delicious. Then we sanded a bit more until the end of the day.
