Did You Know these special facts about St James?
Saint James was one of Jesus’ special friends. He was called an apostle and spent time learning from and helping Jesus.
He was a fisherman before he followed Jesus. He worked by the Sea of Galilee with his brother John and their father.
Jesus asked James to follow Him. When Jesus said, “Come follow me,” James left everything behind right away to be with Him.
He was one of Jesus’ closest apostles. James was part of a small group of three friends (with Peter and John) who saw very important things, like Jesus’ Transfiguration.
He told people about Jesus after Jesus went to heaven. James travelled far to share the Good News, even as far as Spain!
He is believed to have visited what we now call Spain. That’s why many people in Spain love and honour him.
James was very brave and never gave up. Even when things were hard, he kept telling others about Jesus.
He died for his faith. Saint James was the first apostle to be killed because he believed in Jesus. We call this being a martyr.
People go on special walks called pilgrimages to honour him. The most famous is the Camino de Santiago, where people walk many miles to the Cathedral of Santiago in Spain, where he is buried.
His symbol is the scallop shell. Pilgrims carry this shell to show they’re walking in Saint James’ footsteps and to remind them of their faith.
