Wellbeing Report

As part of our school’s commitment to social-emotional learning, the wellbeing team have recently been working with some students in year one to strengthen their friendship skills. The strategies that are being taught can apply to all ages and all friendships, so please feel free to begin to use the phrases below to support your child when they are discussing their friendships at home, as we will be doing at school.
The two key terms being used are ‘Friendship Fires’ and ‘Mean on purpose’ which come from the URSTRONG framework. These phrases are part of the language we use to help children navigate social challenges in a positive, empowered way.
‘Friendship Fires’ refer to everyday conflicts or misunderstandings between friends- things that can usually be resolved with honest conversation, listening and apologies. We teach the students that it’s normal to have these small ‘fires’ in friendships, and we guide them through healthy ways to ‘put them out’.
‘Mean on purpose’ is different. This is when someone is intentionally hurting someone else through words or actions. We help students to recognise that this behaviour is never okay, and we support them in knowing when to walk away, get help from an adult and set clear boundaries.
By using this shared language, children learn to better understand their feelings, solve problems peacefully, and build stronger, kinder friendships. We encourage you to use these terms at home too!
If you would like to know more about this so that you can begin using this language at home please stop by to see us in wellbeing. Alternatively, please email
amy.cleary@educaiton.vic.gov.au
and I can answer any questions or provide further information.
We’ll see you around the school!

Kids Helpline
Have you ever looked up the website Kids Helpline? You may have heard about it before, probably as a place kids can call if they feel they need help but it is filled with things to help parents too. There are so many articles on there from building healthy family relationships, to helping kids with anxiety, talking about cyberbullying and what happens when kids don’t get enough sleep.
In short the Kids Helpline website is an excellent resource just waiting to be explored and defiantly worth your time visiting, there will probably be something there that could help you. https://kidshelpline.com.au/parents
