Below is an overview of what students will be learning across key curriculum areas during the first part of the year.

English:

Our English learning will follow the Ochre curriculum, beginning with a class novel Charlotte’s Web. Through this rich text, students will explore themes, characters, and author’s purpose while strengthening their reading comprehension skills. Students will engage in shared, guided, and independent reading, develop writing skills across different text types, build spelling, grammar, and punctuation knowledge and participate in discussions and respond thoughtfully to texts.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students will be learning through the EMP program, which focuses on developing strong problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking. Lessons encourage students to explain their reasoning, work collaboratively, and explore multiple strategies. Students will be investigating number concepts and place value, solving real-world problems, developing fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

Digital Technologies:

Year 4 students will develop skills in using digital tools safely and effectively. They will learn how data is shared between digital systems, organise and present information using software, and create digital content for different audiences. Students will collaborate responsibly online, understand how to protect their personal information, and begin solving simple problems using basic coding concepts such as algorithms, branching, and repetition.

Respectful Relationships:

Respectful relationships are an important part of our classroom learning. This program supports students to build positive relationships and develop social and emotional skills. Students will learn about respect, empathy, and inclusion. Develop strategies for managing emotions and build skills for positive communication and teamwork.

Humanities:

In this unit, students will explore different habitats and why environments are vital for the survival of people, plants, and animals. They will investigate Australia’s major natural environments, including vegetation zones and water sources, and learn how these support ecosystems and human life. Students will also learn how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples care for the Country through sustainable practices. They will compare Australia’s environments with another continent and examine how human activity impacts natural systems, before developing ideas for how individuals and communities can help protect and care for the environment. 🌏🌱
