Grade 3 Community News

Dear Grade, 3 Families,
Welcome back for the year!
Term 1 is well underway, and students have been settling in well, adjusting to our new bell times. We have loved hearing all about the student’s holidays and all the wonderful activities students participated in. It’s amazing to see how they are consistently following our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Kindness and Growth.

In week 1, students completed our Learning to Learn program. During this time, we settled students back into school and work together to set routines, protocols and classroom agreements. This year has been very exciting with Year Three beginning the BYOD program. Students have been bringing their iPads to school, and we have all been working towards using these in the classroom.
Reading
This year in Year 3 Reading, we will be following the OCHRE English program throughout 2026. We were excited to begin the program in Week 2 and have already seen strong student engagement. In Term 1, students will focus their reading studies around the novel Charlotte’s Web, exploring key themes, characters, and events. Through this text, students will develop their comprehension skills, including making predictions, identifying main ideas, and responding thoughtfully to literature through discussion and written tasks.
Writing
This year in Year 3 Writing, we will be following the OCHRE English program throughout 2026. We were excited to begin the program in Week 2, with students engaging positively in their writing sessions. So far, students have been focusing on building simple, compound, and complex sentences, with explicit instruction on the appropriate use of conjunctions. In Term 1, our text type focus will be narrative, with students developing their ability to plan, draft, and edit engaging stories using increasingly complex sentence structures.
Maths
This year in Year 3 Mathematics, we are excited to be introducing the Explicit Mathematics Program (EMP). Students have settled into the program well and have responded positively to the Daily Review Quick Teach (DRQT) sessions, which help build confidence by regularly revisiting key skills. Students have also completed their first placement assessments, which help teachers understand each child’s current learning level and ensure lessons are tailored to best support their progress throughout the year.
Reminders
- If you have not already done so, please order your child's book pack through compass or the front office.
- Please make sure your children bring their hats to school as they are required to wear them outside during Term 1 and 4.
- Please make sure that students bring their iPads to school, and they are fully charged every day as we are incorporating this through all of our learning.
- Students need to have their own pencil cases this year; we recommend them leaving them at school to save them from being left at home. Please only bring to school the items required on the book list. Any gel pens and sharpies will need to stay home.
- Students are encouraged to be reading at home each night.
- Please sign the BYOD user agreement so students can be using the iPads in the classroom ASAP: https://forms.gle/U6b7tSj6C8aRdvFG8
- Please ensure your child is coming to school with a copy of Charlottes web each day to use during our English lessons.
