French News

Bonjour, dear parents and students!
We are excited to welcome you to a new year of French learning at Tarneit Rise Primary School! Our French team this year includes: (order left to right) Miss Martine, Madame Ma, Mr. Zach, and we are delighted to welcome Mr. Kirby, a new Canadian addition to the team.
This term, students will build confidence in French through speaking, listening, games, songs, and cultural experiences. Below is a snapshot of what each year level will explore in Term 1:
Prep
Students are introduced to French through greetings, names, simple classroom instructions, numbers (1–5), colours, days of the week, and the alphabet.
Grade 1
Students develop basic conversation skills, including greetings, asking names and feelings, classroom language, numbers (11–20), colours, months, and the alphabet.
Grade 2
Students extend their communication skills with manners, classroom language, days and months, numbers to 30, emotions, and a short-written assessment.
Grade 3
Students explore sentence building, articles, family vocabulary, poetry, French words used in English, and shared reading such as La chenille qui fait des trous.
Grade 4
Students learn to tell the time, discuss school subjects, explore food and French culture, read poetry, and follow simple French recipes using imperatives.
Grades 5 & 6
Students focus on verb use (ER verbs), directions, adjectives, routines, hobbies, ordering food in a restaurant, shared texts such as Blanche Neige, and regular revision and assessment.
Jour de la Francophonie (French-speaking World Day) – June 26, 2026
This whole-school celebration will highlight French-speaking cultures from around the world rather than Bastille Day. Students will enjoy performances from the French Choir, poetry, fashion, dance, and music in a vibrant assembly celebrating Francophonie beyond France.
French Poetry Competition (April 2026 – Jianrui & Mr. Zach)
Student enrolment will open in April. This is a wonderful opportunity for interested students to build confidence, pronunciation, and fluency in French.
French Clubs (Grades 3–6)
- French Choir (Mr. Kirby & Madame Martine): Traditional and contemporary French songs, performing at Jour de la Francophonie
- Advanced French Club (Mr. Zach): Extension in vocabulary, grammar, and speaking (Grades 5–6)
- French Development Club (Madame Ma): Games, enrichment, and extension beyond the classroom (Grade 3)
Clubs start up Week 4, so make sure students let their French teacher know so they can sign up.
If you would like to do some revision at home with your children, please feel free to use the resources provided in this term’s newsletters. For our Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students, we have also included some songs below to help support memory retention.
We are looking forward to an exciting year of language learning and cultural discovery at Tarneit Rise!
Warm Regards,
Mr. Zach, Madame Martine, Madame Ma & Mr. Kirby
