Grade 6 Community News

Hello and welcome back! We hope you had an excellent summer break. We have had a great start to the year, and the children have settled back into their routines well. This year we have ten Year 6 classes, and the Grade 6 teaching team is looking forward to a year of learning and growth with our students.
Grade 6 students have spent time getting to know their new teachers and classmates as they begin the 2026 school year. Through our Learn to Learn program, students are revisiting school expectations, becoming familiar with Grade 6 protocols and developing the skills needed to support high-quality learning experiences. Students have adjusted seamlessly to their new classrooms and are showing readiness for a year full of exciting opportunities.
At Tarneit Rise Primary School, our teaching is guided by Barak Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction. These evidence-based practices support student understanding, confidence and long-term learning. In Year 6, this means learning is most effective when teachers provide clear explanations, teach new skills in small steps, model examples, allow regular practice, give timely feedback and revisit learning to support retention.

Writing:
Our Year 6 students are studying the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. Through this text, students will explore key themes such as survival, friendship, resilience, and the impact of war. They will develop their comprehension skills by analysing characters, setting, and plot, while also building vocabulary and responding to the text through discussion and written tasks.
Maths:
In Mathematics, students began by collecting categorical data and then displaying it as graphs in their workbooks. They then analysed themselves as mathematicians and identified their strengths, how they learn best, and what areas they would like to work on.
Sport:
All Grade 6 students will be participating in sport weekly on Friday afternoons, giving them the opportunity to represent the school as part of a team. This term, Cricket, Basketball, T-Ball, Tennis, and Volleyball teams will be selected to compete against other local schools.
Please ensure your child is appropriately dressed in their sporting uniform, including a school hat, so they can participate fully.
A few reminders:
• It is important that students are at school and on time every day, so they are not missing out on valuable learning time.
• During Term 1 and Term 4, students must wear their hats when outside in the playground. Please make sure your child has a TRPS Bucket Hat, with their name clearly labelled.
• Please also ensure that your child brings a water bottle to school each day, filled with fresh water.
• We encourage healthy food for all our students, so please don’t send any chocolates, lollies, or drinks other than water in their lunchboxes. These are sometimes foods that should be enjoyed at home.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
