English

Our first English unit for the year is Kensuke’s Kingdom.  Kensuke's Kingdom is a heartwarming and poignant tale of resilience and the unlikely friendship between a young boy and an older man from different backgrounds, as they navigate the challenges of island life and come to understand and support each other. The book serves as a reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit and the power of companionship in the face of adversity.

Mathematics

Our first Maths unit in term 1 is Data Representation. In this 8-lesson unit, students transition from basic data collection and graphing to more complex data interpretation. A key focus is on interpreting dot plots, data type identification (nominal, ordinal, and discrete), mode calculation, data distribution, line graph interpretation, and using spreadsheets.

Humanities

This Year 5 unit explores the significant period of Australian colonisation in the 1800s, examining the causes of British settlement and its far-reaching impacts. Students examine different perspectives on colonial life, including First Nations experiences, while learning about key events and individuals who shaped colonial Australia. By exploring the Victorian Era, the Industrial Revolution, early settlement patterns, and events such as the Gold Rush, students develop an understanding of how colonial decisions have shaped contemporary Australia. The learning sequence helps students understand the period's chronology and considers the varied perspectives of individuals and groups throughout the 1800s. Analysis of a range of information sources and artefacts supports students in thinking critically and drawing conclusions about the motives, decisions, and perspectives of diverse individuals and communities of the time.
