MEDIA, DRAMA & ARTS

Year 7 students have been introduced to a range of different media forms and are currently exploring magazines as a key example of print media. Students are analysing how magazines use visual elements such as camera angles, images, layout and colour to engage specific target audiences. They are then applying this knowledge to design and create their own zine front cover, using purposeful visual choices to attract and appeal to their intended audience. More to come in issue 2! (I have no photographs yet, Lou may have)

Year 9 students have been exploring how media codes are used to construct and communicate stories. They have been experimenting with camera techniques, acting, and creating their own sound effects, as well as using editing software to combine footage and layer sound effectively. This example from Shirish and Monjural showcases their creativity in producing original sound effects and integrating them into their footage alongside additional special effects. Fantastic work, Year 9s! (Attached a short clip, would be great to include for the newsletter. Zoe may have more to share 🙂) Students are now working towards creating their own short film and designing a movie poster to promote their narrative. More updates of students work, and posters come in the next issue!

Year 10 students have been working exceptionally well as they develop their skills in analysing media representations and audience engagement through the use of codes and conventions. Alongside this knowledge, they have begun planning and developing their own short horror film. Students have shown strong organisation and focus while balancing two SACs at once in their first senior year. Fantastic effort, Year 10s!

Wakakirri 2026 – An Exciting Opportunity for our Students!

We are thrilled to announce that our school will be participating in the Wakakirri Dance Competition this year! The performance event will take place on the week beginning 3rd August. The date will be confirmed in Term 2 by the event organisers, but we will be performing on ONE of the following nights; 3rd August, 5th August or 7th August. The performance will be held on one of these evenings at ‘The Clocktower Theatre’ in Moonee Ponds.

Wakakirri is Australia’s largest performing arts event for schools and provides students with an incredible opportunity to work collaboratively to create and perform a story through dance and drama. Wakakirri is inspired by the belief that great stories can inspire change. It is designed to promote student engagement and well-being in schools through the creation and performance of captivating Story-Dances.

Auditions will be held on Wednesday 11th March and Thursday 12th March in F06 (Drama room). Sign-up sheets will be available from Mrs Mercer in Week 5 - 6. More information will be communicated to students in their PDS class over the next 2 weeks.

Rehearsals will begin in Term 2, with students rehearsing after school on Thursday’s from 3:15 – 4:30pm. Further information regarding permission forms, rehearsal schedules, and costume requirements will be shared in Term 2.

Year 9 Visual Arts - Mixed media exploration and mark making.

Our Year 9 students have recently begun an exciting exploration of the theme Identity through a mixed media mark-making task. Students have been experimenting with a range of materials and techniques to express personal ideas, emotions and experiences in creative ways. This initial stage of the project focuses on developing texture, layering and visual storytelling, with students soon adding meaningful symbols that connect to their own sense of identity. We look forward to seeing how these expressive works evolve as they continue to build depth and personal meaning in their pieces.
