Bringing smiles to residents at Jean Ross House

This term classes from NCS have been able to resume our visits to Jean Ross House. Children from 1T and 1H walked over to meet the residents and bring some sunshine to their day. On our first visit, we sang some songs, chatted with the residents and read them a story. Then we decorated cupcakes with icing and sprinkles - YUM!

When we returned this week, they were so excited to see us again. This time we sang 'Light of the World' and 'My God is So Big'. We then made a beautiful artwork about Springtime and gave them to the residents to put in their rooms. It has been lovely to see the children looking forward to these visits, and being reminded of the importance of grandparents and families.

Exploring Australia's Sporting History: A trip to the SCG and SFS

by Adele G

On Wednesday 6 September, Years 9/10 PASS students visited the the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and Sydney Football Stadium (SFS - also known as Allianz Stadium).

This was a great link to the PASS modules that we have been studying: Australia's Sporting Identity & Event Management. Our tour guide, Peter, showed us around the stadiums and told us heaps of interesting stories and history about the place.

The day started early in the morning when we got on the bus at 7:30am and arrived in Sydney at 10:15am where we had a quick morning tea break before we started the tour.

Firstly we went to the SFS/Allianz Stadium and Peter showed us around. We got to yell our school’s name and hear the echo throughout the stadium which was really cool. We got to see the players' change rooms, members room, recovery room and museum. We also visited the SCG and were lucky enough to see part of the Sydney Swans' training session.

“Sitting in James Tedesco's locker was unreal” Kent - Year 9

“The best thing was seeing the Swans training at the SCG” Jackson B - Year 9“

It was cool hearing where each of the Australian cricket player’s lockers were and I got to sit in Nathan Lyon’s locker” Riley - Year 9

“My highlight of the day was trying to scare the other group when they got off the elevator by hiding behind a wall.” Emily - Year 9

“I loved touching the grass at the stadiums, my hands are now worth millions!” Jay - Year  9

“The recovery pools were interesting and I almost fell in” Ronin - Year 9

The day finished with going to get some lunch then getting back on the bus for a long ride home.

Stage 6 Textiles and Design excursion

On Wednesday 6 September, the Stage 6 Textiles and Design students travelled to the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, to view the ‘30 Years of Future Fashion’.

An important aspect of their HSC studies is to investigate the factors that contribute to the success of contemporary Australian Designers. Students were able to inspect original pieces from successful Australian designers including Akira Isogawa and Dion Lee. Viewing the outfits of final year graduates from four Sydney-based institutions allowed the students a glimpse into the future direction of of Australian fashion.

Passion and Resilience: Olivia O'Rourke's Message to Students

Olivia O'Rourke (diving athlete) recently connected with our Stage 5 students as part of the  Olympics Unleashed program.

The students had the opportunity to gain valuable insights from Olivia's Olympic journey. They learned about the significance of building resilience, setting meaningful goals and discovering their passions.

Olivia shared her personal experiences with the students, offering firsthand accounts of how she overcame challenges to excel in her chosen sport at the highest level. She also emphasized the transferable life lessons learned through sports, which can empower students to achieve their best in various aspects of life, including academics, family, sports and friendships.

Thank you for visiting us Olivia!

Year One Masterchefs

This term, we have explored the theme 'Families Past and Present'. As part of this unit we became masterchefs - making (and eating!) damper.

Students in 1T and 1H worked together to measure and stir ingredients, roll and knead the dough, making damper rolls to share. Mrs Twitchen and Mrs Hefferan helped us make the dough, Mrs Varga helped to bake it, and we all ate some. It was delicious!

Stage 5, New Food Product Development Challenge

The Stage 5 Food Technology class have been studying ‘Food Product Development’ this term. They were challenged to design and prepare a new food product, using fresh apples as the core ingredient.

Mrs Rogers was very impressed with the careful planning, teamwork and creativity of each team. The variety and quality of the products produced was excellent. Among the dishes was a Chicken, Apple and Vegetable Curry, Gingerbread Apple Pie, Pretzel based Apple Pie’, Deconstructed Apple Crumble Parfait, Raspberry, Apple & White Chocolate Baked Cheesecakes and Cinnamon, Apple, Iced Scrolls.

The success of all these dishes, is evidence of how far these students have come, developing their food preparation skills and in their ability to apply their knowledge of sensory and functional properties of various foods. Congratulations to all the students.

Year 7 Students of the Week

Teachers upskill for enrichment!

Part of being a good teacher is to be a lifelong learner. Over the last twelve months teachers have been developing skills in identifying and catering for students who are gifted or have high potential in a particular area. On Tuesday 25 August, Primary and Secondary staff completed a three part course on catering for gifted and high potential students. Our staff have a heart for really knowing all their students and responding to their needs, whether it is support or enrichment!
