Choose Your Own Adventure . . . .

STORIES FROM THE LIBRARY | A NEW CHAPTER

Emily Conolan Author Visit

To conclude our Book Week celebrations, Year 5/6 students enjoyed an inspiring visit from Tasmanian author Emily Conolan.

Emily Conolan is a writer, teacher and humanitarian worker. Stories of courage and resilience told to Emily by refugees she worked with, and her own family history, inspired her to write the Freedom Finders series. There are three books in the series, written using the popular ‘choose your own adventure’ format. These books immerse readers in stories of immigration. Readers can choose their path as a Somalian boy escaping war-torn Mogadishu for Australia in 2011, an Irish girl travelling from London to Australia in 1825, or as a girl leaving war-torn Italy to find a new home in Australia’s Snowy Mountains in the 1950s.

Historical fiction allows students to deeply experience the life and history of others and the challenges they face, and encourages students to develop kindness, empathy and compassion. Jackie French is another author who writes excellent historical fiction. We have many of her books in our library.

We really enjoyed learning from Emily how to plot a choose your own adventure story and look forward to working on our own stories.
