Year 5/6 News

Author visit - Nova Weetman 

As part of the Boroondara Writers in Schools 2023 program, the Year 5/6 students will welcome Melbourne author, Nova Weetman, next Tuesday 24 October. Nova has written for TV and is the author of many middle grade and young adult novels including, 'The Secrets We Keep,' 'The Secrets We Share,' 'Sick Bay' and 'The Jammer.'

 

Year 6 Sailing program

The Year 6 Sailing program will commence this term at The Boatshed, Albert Park. The program has been designed as an introduction to sailing and at the completion, each participant should be able to achieve the following:

  • Steering with tiller extension
  • Be able to turn around (tacking, gybing)
  • Comfortably reach around a figure of 8 course using both ways of turning
  • Be able to sail up wind, assisted by power boat 
  • Be able to sail downwind using a follow the leader method
  • Participate in a capsize
  • Participate in rescue drills
  • Learn the 3 safety rules while on the water
  • Be able to identify the no go zone and the effects it has on your sailing
  • A basic understanding of currents and tides
  • Basic wind awareness of direction and strength
  • Learn respect and care for a boat

Lessons will be completed on 27 Oct, 3 Nov, 10 Nov, 17 Nov, 24 Nov
