This Week At OOPS

Term 2 English in Years 5 and 6

In English this term, our Year 5 and 6 cohort is immersed in rich learning aligned with our Term 2 Inquiry topic Change, with a focus on exploring the history and impact of colonisation in Australia. All classes are reading the mentor text Nanberry by Jackie French, using it as a springboard for discussion and deeper understanding of historical perspectives. Alongside this, students are exploring non-fiction texts, with a focus on identifying key language features and text structures. They are applying this knowledge by planning and writing their own information texts on topics of personal interest, while also developing skills in locating reliable online sources and practising effective note-taking strategies. Spelling continues to be a key focus, now embedded within the weekly homework routine, and is supported in class through word work lessons that include word study and language conventions. Students are also working to improve the accuracy and presentation of their handwriting, while building their digital skills through regular touch-typing practice using TypeClub, which is also included as part of their weekly homework.

Bubbles Bring the Fun

The Wellbeing Wagon brought bubbles to the playground last week, creating a fun and engaging experience for students. Our Year 6 Wellbeing Leaders took charge, helping to organise and run the activity with great enthusiasm and responsibility.

Students loved chasing and popping the bubbles, with plenty of laughter and excitement across the yard. It was a simple and fun way to promote connection, play, and positive interactions during break times, because who doesn't love bubbles?

It was fantastic to see our student leaders stepping up and contributing to a positive and inclusive school environment.

NF Awareness Month

Hi OOPS community!  May is NF (Neurofibromatosis) Awareness month.  There are three types of NF and all can be hard to live with.  So any support and awareness goes a long way for families living with NF.

Take a look at the website to learn more: NF Awareness month - NF Awareness Month - Children's Tumour Foundation of Australia

Thank you,

Winter Food Relief

We are proud to once again support FoodBoost, Anglicare Victoria’s major winter appeal, now in its fourth year at our school.

FoodBoost helps stock emergency relief centres with much-needed essentials for families doing it tough during the colder months. Donations of pantry staples, lunchbox items, hygiene products, as well as supermarket and fuel gift cards, make a real difference to those in our community.

Old Orchard families always make us incredibly proud with their generosity, and we know this year will be no exception.

We invite all families to get involved and support this important cause. Donations can be left at the office throughout the month of May.
