Student Wellbeing

Mrs Rebecca Beveridge

PBL Tier 2

At St Joseph’s, we have proudly implemented our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework for over five years. During this time, it has been a rewarding journey, with many students successfully developing a strong understanding of what it means to be Respectful, Responsible and Resilient learners.

All students engage with PBL at a Tier 1 level. This universal approach focuses on explicitly teaching expected behaviours and recognising students through our “Gotcha” system when they demonstrate these positive behaviours.

We are pleased to share that we have now been accepted to implement a Tier 2 approach. This additional level of support is designed to benefit approximately 10–15% of students who may require extra guidance to further develop their social, emotional and behavioural skills.

Tier 2 supports are proactive and targeted. They may be delivered in small group or individual settings and focus on explicitly teaching and reinforcing positive behaviours such as following instructions, building positive relationships and managing emotions.

As part of this, we will begin implementing our first Tier 2 program: Check In, Check Out (CICO). Students involved in this program will:

  • Check in regularly with a staff member
  • Set personalised goals
  • Have structured opportunities to practise and be acknowledged for positive behaviours

CICO aims to support students in feeling more confident, successful and connected in both the classroom and playground.

You will be contacted directly if your child is selected to participate in this program, and we will guide you through the process and expectations.

Our PBL Tier 2 Team consists of myself, Katie and Nick. All staff play an important role in supporting students through ongoing monitoring, encouragement and feedback. If your child is participating in the CICO program, you can expect weekly communication via email or phone from your child’s teacher.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Team Teach

At the start of the Term, the staff at St Joseph's participated in the Professional Development Program called 'Team Teach'.

What is Team Teach?

Team Teach is a program used to support positive behaviour and ensure a safe, respectful learning environment for all students. Team Teach focuses on building strong relationships, understanding behaviour as communication, and using calm, consistent strategies to support students when they feel overwhelmed.

What did the staff learn?

Staff were trained to recognise early signs of distress and use de-escalation techniques such as offering choices, giving space, and using supportive language. Staff learned about how different behaviours and emotions can look and lead to different reactions. Staff were also provided with helpful scripts to use help support de-escalating behaviour.

Our goal at St Joseph's with Team Teach is always to help students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn, while promoting positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing across the school.

Celebrate the “Win of the Day”

A simple but powerful way to connect with your child is by asking them about the “win of their day.” This could be something big, like learning a new skill, or something small, like being a kind friend or trying their best with a tricky task.

Taking a moment each day to talk about these wins helps children build confidence, develop a positive mindset, and recognise their own progress. It also encourages them to reflect on their learning and emotions in a meaningful way.

You might ask questions like:

  • What was your favourite part of today?
  • What made you feel proud?
  • Did you try something new or challenging?

By celebrating these everyday successes, you are helping your child focus on the positives, build resilience, and strengthen their sense of self. It’s a small conversation that can make a big difference!
