Foundation: Mrs Fleming
Welcome back to Term 2! We are very excited for another term of learning in Foundation. There has been no rest for the Foundation students as we jumped straight back into learning.
In Literacy, we are continuing to learn about letter sounds and enhancing our literacy knowledge by introducing word reading and building. We have met the following characters and letter sounds this term:
Fifi Flamingo /f/
Rosie Rabbit /r/
I can’t wait to see who we will meet next!
Along with learning these sounds, we are learning how to correctly form these lowercase letters.
We were very excited to send home our Term 2 Reading Diary last week along with our very first decodable reader! Thank you to the families who are taking the time to complete their home reading each night and recording this in the diary. Your support at home goes a long way in helping the students practise the skills they are learning at school. Please remember to keep sending your green reader bags to school every day.
In Maths, we have started a new topic, Part-Whole, where we start with a group/whole and break this number up into two or three parts. This week, we have been working with numbers to five and then extending to use numbers to ten. When partitioning we are pulling apart our numbers into two or three parts. To help this learning process we are using our two-sided counters to see how numbers can be physically partitioned.
This week we held our very first Class Meeting. As our Student Advisory Representatives Josie and Ruger explained what we needed to do and were first to share their ideas. It was great to chat about the things we think our school does well, what we think we could do better and talk about any interesting ideas or suggestions we have to improve our school. Josie and Ruger will take our ideas to their next Student Advisory Meeting.
Grade 1/2: Mrs McKiernan & Mrs Tyler
Welcome to Term 2! We’re excited to dive into another wonderful term of learning and growth with our Grade 1/2 students. After a fantastic start to the year, our learners are becoming more confident, curious, and ready to take on new challenges. This term promises plenty of different learning activities and opportunities to build on their skills across all areas.
In Literacy, our Grade 1 learners have been exploring the fun world of homophones—words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings, like “meat” and “meet” or “week” and “weak.” Students are learning to listen carefully and think about context to choose the correct word. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they play with language and discover how words can be both tricky and exciting!
In Mathematics, we have been revisiting the concept of place value, with a special focus on understanding the role of 0. Students are learning that 0 is not “nothing,” but an important digit known as a placeholder. Through hands-on activities, visual models, and number games, learners are building a stronger understanding of how each digit’s position affects the value of a number. This deeper knowledge is helping them read, write, and work with numbers more confidently.
Grade 1/2: Miss Wooden
We are thrilled to welcome everyone back to Term 2! We hope you all had a wonderful break and are ready for another exciting term filled with learning and creativity in our Grade 1/2 class.
In literacy, students will be engaging in more complex sentence structures and exploring different genres of writing. Our numeracy sessions will include more challenges in addition and subtraction, as well as introducing basic measurement concepts. This term, we're diving into humanities, and everyone is super excited about it! It’s a great chance to explore human experiences, culture, and history in a fun way.
We’ve had a great start to the term, and everyone is really excited for Cross Country and our Liturgy this Friday! It’s going to be a fantastic time to come together and enjoy some friendly competition.
Grade 3: Miss Taylor
Welcome back to Term 2! We’ve hit the ground running, and it has been fantastic to see our students return full of energy and ready to learn. They have jumped straight back into our class routines and are absolutely smashing it—it’s been a great start to the term!
This term, we are excited to introduce some new areas of learning. In Wellbeing, we have begun the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) program. So far, students have been exploring how we respond to stressful situations and manage big feelings. We’ve even played some fun and thought-provoking games, encouraging students to think outside the box and uncover the “secret message” behind each activity.
We have also started Humanities this term, focusing on Geography and History. Students have begun exploring the idea of communities—from our school and local area to sporting teams and beyond. We have been discussing the different communities we belong to, their purpose, and why they are so important in our lives.
It’s been a big couple of weeks in the classroom! In Maths, students have wrapped up our fractions unit—and what a success it was! The class not only loved learning about fractions but showed great confidence and understanding. A highlight was our game of "Fraction Memory Snap", where students put their knowledge (and memory!) to the test. We are now moving on to our next topic: length.
In English, we have begun a new class text, 'Uncle Xbox' by Jared Thomas. Students are using the story as inspiration to explore adverbial phrases and sentence expansion, looking for ways to “bump up” their writing and make it more detailed and engaging. We are loving this book already, with the students wanting to read more every day!
As we settle into the term, it’s clear our 3's are ready to take on new challenges, keep growing in confidence, and make the most of every learning opportunity ahead!
Grade 4/5: Mrs Stock
Welcome back to Term 2! It has been wonderful to see the students return refreshed and ready to learn. Everyone has settled back into routines well and it sounds like many families enjoyed a lovely break.
In English, students have begun exploring new class novels. The Grade 4 students have started reading Uncle Xbox. This novel follows Dusty, a young boy navigating challenges such as family hardship and friendships, while also discovering his strengths and resilience. As the story unfolds, students will explore themes of identity, culture, and connection, particularly through the stories shared by Dusty’s Uncle Rick about culture and Country.
The Grade 5 students are reading Us Mob Walawurru, a historical fiction text that follows Ruby’s life growing up in Central Australia during the 1960s. In the opening part of the novel, Ruby travels with her mob to Tulu for a sports carnival, which becomes a meaningful family gathering. Through Ruby’s reflections, students are beginning to explore connections to Country and consider how different ways of life are experienced and valued. The Grade 5 students have also enjoyed taking their reading outside during the week, making the most of the beautiful weather.
We have begun our new Mathematics unit on Fractions. Students are learning to represent, compare and order fractions, and place them on number lines. They will also explore mixed numerals and improper fractions, and learn how to convert between the two.
You can support your child at home by practising fractions in everyday situations, such as sharing food (e.g. halves, quarters, eighths), asking which fraction is larger, and encouraging your child to explain their thinking.
Last week, students also enjoyed their first RRRR lesson. They explored different coping strategies to help manage big emotions and began to recognise how their self-talk can influence the way they feel and respond in different situations.
Grade 5/6: Miss Rasmussen
The Grade 5/6 classroom has well and truly jumped back into learning, with students showing great enthusiasm and curiosity across all areas.
In Maths, we have been continuing our work on fractions. There have been plenty of “ah ha!” moments as students deepen their understanding of how to recognise and convert equivalent fractions. It has been fantastic to see their confidence grow as concepts begin to click. We are now looking forward to moving into 3D objects, which will bring lots of hands-on learning and exploration.
In English, we have started our new class text Us Mob – Walawarru. This powerful story is told from the perspective of the main character, Ruby, and is set in a remote Aboriginal community during the 1960s. Students have already begun to engage thoughtfully with the text and its context.
To complement this, we have started planning a factual recount on the topic of the 1967 Referendum. Students have been learning about what led to the referendum, what happened during this important moment in history, and the changes that followed. It has been wonderful to see their interest and understanding grow as they explore this significant event in Australia’s history.
It has been a fantastic start to the term, and we are excited to see this learning continue to build.
