Indonesian - Ibu Susan

In Indonesian we have been super busy starting our new topics. The JP classes are learning the names of many minibeasts and using those words in writing activities, class stories, songs, games and craft. We have also welcomed our new teddies, Agus (the monkey) and Ikan Paus (the whale). The year 4/5 students have been designing Indonesian villages in small groups using several place names like toko-toko (shops). Some have even included volcanoes! Sallie's students have almost finished designing and making their sea turtle board games and are keen to share them with other classes. We have also been reading a novel about a young Javanese boy named Sarindi who gets a fabulous dragon kite for his birthday. On top of all of this, the students are also using prepositions of place to describe the locations of various places in town - sibuk sekali! (very busy!).

HASS - Izzy

This term, all classes are beginning to focus on geography. In the Junior Primary, we are exploring places in Australia and how we can care for them. We have been inquiring into natural, constructed and managed places, and looking at how our special places make us feel. We have also discussed how we could create places that make people feel happy, as well as places and spaces that could be added to the local area.

In Middle and Upper Primary, we have been exploring both sustainability and countries outside of Australia, especially Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. At this point, we are introducing key ideas about our neighbouring countries and beginning to do research into the similarities and differences between Australia and the countries near us. So far, we have explored interesting and unusual jobs and tourism in other countries.

I am looking forward to students demonstrating their HASS learning through a variety of projects as we get closer to the end of the term!

PE - Troy

This term we have started off looking at hockey. Students have been focussing on developing a push pass, dribbling and attacking and defending skills through a range of fun games. At times, students have found the concept of hockey challenging due to the unfamiliar skills required. It has been great to expose students to a new game which some may want to look into participating in through clubs in the area.

Our two junior classes have had some special visitors over the past few weeks. They were lucky enough to have a training session from one of the coaches from Netball SA, which focussed on different types of passing and movement skills used in games. They were also told about Net Set Go as a pathway to continue netball if they liked it. They also had a visit from SANFL, going through a range of skills and games which the students enjoyed. They were also informed about NAB AFL Auskick and some of the great goodies you can get from joining.

If you are interested, please speak to your local football and netball club.

Gardening - Jo

Composting, worms, microorganisms and the like are being talked about in gardening. The students in 3/4 class are learning about the composting systems we have at school. Collecting the school's green waste is a weekly task, and we are looking further into the ratios of wet/dry ingredients, being the hydrogen/carbon components for effective composting. The students are taking part in layering the open compost as well as making some compostable pots for seedlings.

Here are some photos of the last session of cooking at the end of last term where we made Pilaf Rice/Stir-fry.
