Literacy
In Literacy, students have been actively practising using their digraph sounds in their writing, supporting them to apply their phonics knowledge when spelling new words. Students have also enjoyed partner reading, where they take turns reading aloud, listen respectfully, support each other with tricky words and build their fluency and confidence as readers.
In Writing, we have continued our focus on narrative writing. Students have been exploring the important features of a narrative, including characters, settings, problems, solutions and interesting details. They have been learning how authors use descriptive language, sequencing and creative ideas to engage their audience. This learning links to the Victorian Curriculum as students develop their ability to create imaginative texts, use growing knowledge of sounds and spelling patterns, and reread their writing to make improvements.
Science and Maths
In Science and Maths, students have continued exploring sustainability through hands-on learning experiences. Each class has planted one herb, vegetable or fruit crop to care for as part of our inquiry into how we can look after living things and make sustainable choices. In 1/2A, we were very excited when Tyler’s family kindly brought in some rainbow corn seeds for us to plant. This sparked lots of curiosity, and students have enjoyed researching rainbow corn and learning more about how it grows.
Students have been taking responsibility for watering the plants each day, observing changes, discussing what plants need to survive and thinking about how we can care for our environment. This learning has also linked beautifully with Maths, as students make observations, compare growth, discuss time, use measurement language and collect information about our crops. It has been wonderful to see the students’ excitement, teamwork and sense of responsibility as they care for our classroom gardens.
