This term, students across Foundation to 6 have been sharing their ideas about how we can improve our school. We’ve had lots of thoughtful, creative, and practical suggestions, and today we’d like to share some of the key themes that came up.
One of the biggest areas students spoke about was improving our play spaces. Many classes suggested adding a gaga pit, swings, and a sandpit, as well as improving seating by adding more benches and buddy benches. There were also ideas about making our ovals safer and more functional, such as fixing soccer nets, moving goals, increasing fence height, and addressing rabbit holes.
Students also had great ideas about equipment and activities. These included new cricket equipment, better bike racks, and more organised games, such as teacher-versus-student competitions at lunchtime.
Another strong focus was on wellbeing and inclusion. There were also ideas linked to initiatives like “Do It For Dolly” to support kindness and wellbeing in our school.
Our school environment was another important topic. Students suggested more plants in garden areas, compost bins, a veggie garden, and more regular maintenance of spaces like bathrooms. There were also suggestions to repaint play equipment to keep our school looking bright and welcoming.
Students also shared ideas about the canteen and food options, such as more hot food, more drink flavours, icy poles, and even a slushy machine. There were also practical suggestions about improving the packaging and organisation of lunch orders.
Finally, students raised some general suggestions and questions, including class pets, opportunities for brain breaks, fixing gates, and how certain school programs and fundraising money are used.
As a Student Voice Team, our role is to listen, represent, and share these ideas. We can't act on every suggestion right away. We are working with staff and leadership to prioritise what is possible and what will have the biggest positive impact on our school.
We are proud of how thoughtful and engaged our students have been, and we are excited to continue working together to make our school an even better place for everyone.
