Italian

Welcome to Italian for 2025!

A warm welcome to our Prep families and new families—Benvenuti a St Joseph's!

It was delightful to receive so many greetings in Italian from our wonderful students. I’m excited for the year ahead as we dive into the world of Italian, and of course, we’ll have a fantastic time celebrating all things Italian on our Italian Day later in the year (Thursday, November 13th).

The Prep students will be learning our whole school prayer “Gesù Gesù”:

Gesù Gesù stai con me.Gesù Gesù prega per me.Gesù Gesù sono con te.

They’ll start the term by exploring the story “Ecco Pinocchio,” which will be our focus text for this term. Over the coming weeks, they’ll engage in a variety of songs, games, and activities designed to boost their confidence in using key words and phrases from the story.

The Junior School will commence the term with the “Caro Gesù” song. They’ll revise and practice using Italian for everyday interactions such as greetings, polite phrases, and classroom routines. In our first few lessons, we’ll focus on expressions like buongiornociaocome stai?Come ti chiami? Mi chiamo… E tu? They will also enjoy the text Il pappagallo, a rhyming story that encourages them to participate in the narrative and chants.

The Middle School students will begin the unit “A Ticket to Italy,” where they’ll discuss what to pack for a trip to Italy, taking into account seasons, climate, and cultural aspects.

In the Senior School, students will explore the world of Italian cuisine and learn how central food is to Italian culture. They’ll begin the term by investigating the structure of a typical Italian menu and will even have the opportunity to create their own!

Here’s to a positive and enjoyable term of learning Italian!
