Learning and Teaching

Dear Parents,

We have had a very smooth start to the year. All learning spaces have had time to help students develop a deeper sense of belonging, and to build the emotional and relational foundations to a pathway for learning through our “Start Up” program.

Over the next few weeks, student assessments will will be taking place. Assessment and data play a crucial role in shaping effective teaching and learning at St Joseph's. Through a variety of assessment methods, staff gather valuable insights into student progress, strengths, and areas for improvement. This data-driven approach ensures that instruction is targeted, responsive, and aligned with curriculum expectations.

Assessment is not just about measuring achievement—it is a tool for informing instruction, identifying learning needs, and guiding intervention strategies. By systematically collecting and analysing data, teachers can tailor their teaching methods to support individual students.

This term we will be implementing MacquLit which will significantly enhance literacy outcomes for students who are needing additional literacy support. As a structured, evidence-based intervention program, MacquLit provides targeted support for students in Years 3–6 who require explicit instruction in phonics, decoding, and fluency.

Benefits of MacquLit

  • Evidence-Based: Developed using research-backed literacy practices.
  • Structured & Systematic: Provides a clear, sequenced approach to reading.
  • Supports Readers: Helps students develop foundational literacy skills to improve overall reading comprehension.
  • Flexible Implementation: Can be adapted based on school resources and student needs.

By implementing MacquLit it will provide a targeted, systematic intervention that empowers students to become confident, capable readers.

Kind regards

Megan Barber
