Incorporating Numeracy During the School Holidays

The school holidays are the perfect time for families to enjoy some quality time together—and they also offer great opportunities to help children develop their problem-solving and numeracy skills in a fun, practical way. Parents can easily weave maths into everyday activities, making it feel relevant and exciting for kids.

Take budgeting for a family outing, for example. Parents can involve their children in comparing prices, calculating discounts, or estimating the total cost of a shopping trip. This not only helps with addition and subtraction but also teaches children about money and planning.

Another fantastic way to practice numeracy is in the kitchen! Cooking together offers countless opportunities to measure ingredients, convert units (like from cups to tablespoons), and even adjust recipes to suit the number of people you’re cooking for. These activities help children practice fractions, multiplication, and measurement in a hands-on, enjoyable way.

Parents can also encourage time management by planning the family holiday schedule. How much time will it take to get to the park? When should we leave to make sure we’re there on time? Setting timers for activities or helping children plan their day provides a chance to practice understanding time and sequencing events.

By incorporating numeracy into real-life situations, parents can show their children that maths isn’t just something learned in the classroom—it’s a valuable tool for solving problems and making decisions every day. So, whether it’s calculating the cost of ice cream or timing a game of soccer, the school holidays are a wonderful time to make numeracy part of the fun!

As most of you know the year 6’s are leaving our school soon.  After 7 years of being here, we are all ready to move on but will miss Merri-bek Primary School dearly.  We have had such great times here and made so many wonderful memories and friends.  As well as having so many exciting experiences, we have learnt many important things that we will use for the rest of our lives.  All of us would like to say thankyou to our peers, teachers, Principal’s and the School Community.  Thank you for helping and supporting all of us on our Primary School Journey.  Taking this next step will be different, but we will always cherish and remember the time we have had at Merri-bek Primary School.

Here's to the class of 2024.

Sincerely Your Grade 6 School and Vice Captains.
