From the Head of the Junior School

By the time we read this, school will be over for another year. Everyone is tired, especially our little people and our teachers! We’ve had a sprint to finish this term and so many wonderful things to fit in.

Fittingly, so many of those things were celebrations. Our Stage 3 Narran Christmas play, our Nativities, Year 6 Graduation, Year 4 Farewell Assembly, class parties, staff good byes and of course, Presentation Day. I’m glad that we are in a community that celebrates together – the learning and growth of all our students, and the reason we are here – the birth of Jesus.

I pray your holiday is restful and safe. I pray you have time together as a family and that the time is quality time. I look forward to seeing you next year, when we will return ready for an exciting year of learning, welcoming new people to our community and growing together.

Junior School Basketball Report - Term 4, Week 7

BMGS Stars played against the Spurs in what I had hoped would be an easy game for us. Instead, the competition was tight and combined with a really hot stadium, we had to really work hard to get the win. The boys in defense did a great job keeping the players out and well done to Alexander Kinnear and Michael Lynch for doing a superb job at forcing the opposition to have to take long shots. Jari Povelsen got two clean shots for his penalty shots, which helped not only with the score but motivated the team to get more points on the board. Other point scorers were Mason Barnett, Hugo Cortemanche and Alexander Kinnear. The boys are highly motivated to move up the ladder and luckily for us, we are still in 6th place.

The BMGS Avengers had both their training and games cancelled this week due to the extreme weather conditions. This is something that has never happened before in my time as a basketball coach.

I am hoping for cooler temperatures next week.

BMGS Stars

I didn’t want to say anything at the time but Friday the 23rd of November was my last training session with the Under 12 Boys. As this term has come to an end, I have been quietly counting down all of my ‘lasts’ at BMGS and although I would have liked to have informed the boys at the time of their last training with me, I didn’t want to make it about me because basketball is a team effort and people come and go all the time.

I have worked with most of the boys since they were in my class in Year 3 and how fantastic it has been to watch them go from kids chucking the ball around in the playground to an organized team with set jobs, improved basketball skills and above all, a genuine love of the game. The boys have worked really hard to climb the ladder this season and they have been much better at landing their shots. This week’s game is evidence of that. We played the Springwood Sparks on the 2nd of December, who are 2 positions above us on the ladder. It was a tough game, made tougher by playing in such hot conditions but the boys really dug deep and managed to bring the difference to only 2 shots. We lost 15 to 19. Congratulations to Alexander Kinnear, Nixon Van Swieten and Hugo Courtemanche for their shots and to the rest of the team for their hard work to make sure those baskets were a team effort.

If you are around in the school holidays and would like to support the boys as they come to the half way point of their season, come and watch them play and throw your support behind them. Our last two games will be Monday 9th December at 5:30 and Monday 16th December at 6:15. Hopefully we will see you there.

BMGS Avengers

Due to the cut-off date of information required for the newsletter being before their game and training. I am unable to include a full report about the Avengers.

Competitions and development sessions will return the week starting Monday 3rd February 2025.
