VISUAL ART REPORT

2025 is off to a wonderful start in the Visual Arts, students are already busily working on paintings, lino-print designs and ceramic sculptures. As a faculty, we are really excited about exploring the potential of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 to develop innovative new learning tasks that acknowledge diverse perspectives and foster community collaboration. We are really pleased to welcome two extraordinary new Visual Arts teachers, Kristy Soos at East Campus and Joelle Ferre at McKinnon Road.

Kristy Soos

Teaching for me is about creating connections and sharing my love of Art and Design. As an educator for the past 20 years, I have taught in a variety of different schools, and across a range of Visual Arts subjects, including Art, VCD, Digital Photography, Ceramics and VCE Art Creative Practice as well as Visual Communication Design. A hands-on approach and belief that each student can achieve their best is adopted in each of my classes. I am looking forward to working at East campus with the Year 8s and 9s

Joelle Ferre

I began my teaching career in primary education having previously completed an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts majoring in Photo media and a Masters of Teaching. It wasn’t long before I realised that my happy place was the art classroom. After over ten years of working in primary education I eventually moved into the secondary sector, and I have found my love for guiding and supporting my students to explore a range of art forms and develop visual literacy skills. I am so excited about being part of the McKinnon community.

VISUAL ARTS CAPTAIN

Students are reminded to consider applying to be a Visual Arts Captain. This outstanding leadership opportunity is a change to inspire and promote positive change using the power of visual language. Details can be found on the Compass newsfeed and applications close this Friday 7 February.

For families of Media and Photography students looking for a free weekend activity, I encourage you to check out the work of Australian photographer Petrina Hicks. Snakes and Mirrors is in its closing weeks at the Museum of Australian Photography (MaPH) in Wheelers Hill.

Hicks’ large large-scale photographic works may also be of interest to Year 10 Art students who will investigate myths and legends later this semester, as she explores mythology and fables from a contemporary female perspective in her work.
